How Can A Residential Care Home Meet The Needs Of Your Loved One

This article has been viewed 12 times.

A residential care home provides a much needed service for the elderly. They are sometimes called Board and Care Homes, Adult Family Homes, and Foster Homes. Whatever they are called, they provide basically the same services. Different states call them by different names. They provide a natural environment for elderly who need some assistance, but not to the level of more restrictive environments.

Intensive nursing service is not allowed to be provided in these arrangements. Different states define intensive nursing services in different ways. Some will not allow maintaining catheters and colostomy sites or injections. Others will allow that, but still limit the amount of other nursing services allowed.

All of these facilities can supply such needs as toileting, bathing and feeding, and caring for urinary and bowel incontinence needs. Often family members do not feel adequate in providing these needs and services, so choose to place their elderly relative in a facility that can do so in a non-restrictive environment.

These facilities don?t provide the intensive services that other facilities do. They do not provide the round the clock service that other facilities do. They have a homier setting, with a maximum of six residents. There are usually two people caring for those people, meaning there is a ration of 1:3, a very reasonable ratio.

This arrangement if excellent for persons suffering from Alzheimer?s Disease. They only have a couple of people in charge to adjust to, and there are not a lot of people in the facility for them to adjust to, lessening their confusion. They can be kept busy with a variety of activities planned by the persons taking care of them, helping to eliminate some of the frustration and difficulty with this condition.

If there in no need for intense nursing home services, this setting is ideal so far as expense is concerned. It is only approximately half of the cost of a nursing facility. The degree of assistance needed is provided, at much less cost than what it would cost if a greater degree of assistance were needed. Of course, if the assistance is needed, this arrangement wouldn?t be appropriate.

Placing a loved one in an alternative setting is never very pleasant. The more homelike the setting, the easier it is on the persons having to make that decision. The closest thing to the normal environment is the residential care home. It is less expensive and allows a greater degree of independence if the person is capable of handling that. This makes it easier all around for everyone.
