Julia's Fitness Blog - Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss

Wow, has it really been over a month since I last posted on here? With extra work coming in, a bit of traveling and a family bereavement to deal with, the last few weeks have been a bit of a blur.

?

I?ve been away from home a lot lately, so I haven?t been able to take my weight and body fat measurements very often, but I think I?ve been hovering around the 21% mark.

?

I?m pretty happy with the shape I?m in at the moment, which is probably one of the reasons why I haven?t made changes to keep my progress going, but it hasn?t exactly been foremost in mind lately anyway. That said, I still have a bit of fat I?d like lose and I know I?d feel bad if I gave up on this before reaching the 18% body fat target I set for myself, so I am starting to think about upping the ante a bit.

?

I?ve been reading about intermittent fasting for quite a while. This is where you go totally without food for a set period of time before returning to normal eating. You still have liquids of course, just nothing with calories. A lot of people I know have been trying it out since seeing the BBC Horizon documentary about it a few weeks ago and I?ve been hearing some very encouraging reports. Most people seem to find fasting for a period of up to 24 hours is manageable and, so long as they don?t over-compensate by gorging-out before or after, they?re achieving impressive fat loss. There also appear to be various other health benefits to fasting. Personally, I?m not convinced these go beyond what you would expect from any restricted calorie diet, but some people fast for health reasons alone.

?

One of my biggest concerns when I started looking into fasting for weight loss was that it would put the body into ?starvation mode? and cause it to cling on to fat rather than releasing it for energy, making people feel lethargic and ill during the fast and causing them regain any lost fat and more besides once they started eating again. I was also worried that it was cause a loss of muscle tissue. But having read up on it, it seems that isn?t what happens, at least not when fasting for period a short as 24 hours. Quite the contrary, most of the people I?ve been speaking to have said their energy levels are not affected and, although they notice peaks and troughs in their weight, as you would expect around days when they?re not putting any food into their bodies, over the long term their body fat levels are falling.

?

?

For me, one of the biggest attractions of intermittent fasting is the simplicity of it. No one can claim it?s anything new or some kind of amazing breakthrough they?ve made in weight loss science. Fasting is basically just eating less, which unsurprisingly causes the body to use its fuel/fat reserves. If someone fasted for two days every week, then over the course of each week they?ll have cut their total calorie intake by 2/7, which is almost 30%, so it?s no wonder they?d lose weight.

?

Fasting is definitely not for everyone. But, for some people, taking food off the menu entirely for a set period of time can be an easier resolution to stick to than an eating programme. Obviously, this is not something for children, or anyone in ill health, or pregnant women, or people with a history of eating disorders, etc. But for people who are in good shape physically and mentally, it could be an option.

?

I want to stress, that I?m not at this stage advocating intermittent fasting. I?m just kind of thinking out loud here while I?m looking into it. But I am certainly intrigued. So intrigued, in fact, that I tried it out myself yesterday?

?

I had intended to write all about my experience in this post, but I seem to have a got a bit over-excited about the background there and now I have to go and get on with some work! So I?ll leave you with that for now, but I will tell you about how yesterday went in a post either later today or tomorrow.

?

In the meantime, I?m very keen to hear your thoughts on this, so do please leave a comment.

(AP) ? Missouri Rep. Todd Akin kept a low profile Monday, a day after saying women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies in "a legitimate rape" situation and that conception is rare in such cases. At least two Senate Republicans urged him to abandon the race.

The congressman had no public appearances scheduled Monday, and did not plan any further comments on the issue, according to a campaign spokesman. Akin canceled a Monday morning interview on St. Louis radio station KMOX.

The six-term representative is the GOP nominee for the Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.

Asked in an interview Sunday on KTVI-TV if he would support abortions for women who have been raped, Akin said: "It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Later Sunday, Akin released a statement saying that he "misspoke" during the interview, though the statement did not say specifically which points were in error.

"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview, and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," Akin's statement said.

Akin also said he believes "deeply in the protection of all life" and does "not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action."

The backlash against Akin's comments brought some calls for him to get out of the Senate race, including from Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, considered to be one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans in the November election.

"As a husband and father of two young women, I found Todd Akin's comments about women and rape outrageous, inappropriate and wrong," said Brown, who is locked in a tight race with Elizabeth Warren. "There is no place in our public discourse for this type of offensive thinking."

Brown said Akin should apologize and resign the Senate nomination.

Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, said in a tweet that Akin "should step aside today for the good of the nation."

Akin's comments also brought a swift rebuke from the campaign of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Romney and Ryan "disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.

Romney went further in an interview with National Review Online, calling Akin's comment "insulting, inexcusable and frankly wrong."

"Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive," Romney said.

In an emailed statement Sunday, McCaskill said it was "beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape."

This month, the 65-year-old congressman won the state's Republican Senate primary by a comfortable margin. During the primary campaign, Akin enhanced his standing with TV ads in which former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee praised him as "a courageous conservative" and "a Bible-based Christian" who "supports traditional marriage" and "defends the unborn."

Ushering Akin from the race is complicated by the fact that he has never been a candidate beholden to the party establishment. Since being elected to Congress in 2000, Akin has relied on a grassroots network of supporters. His Senate campaign is being run by his son.

Behind the scenes, Republican officials were looking for intermediaries trusted by Akin to try to coax him from the race.

Missouri election law allows candidates to withdraw 11 weeks before Election Day. That means the deadline to exit the Nov. 6 election would be 5 p.m. Tuesday. Otherwise, candidates would need a court order to withdraw.

If Akin were to leave, state law holds that the Republican state committee has two weeks to name a replacement. The candidate would be required to file within 28 days of Akin's exit.

Akin, a former state lawmaker who was first elected to the House in 2000, also has a long-established base among evangelical Christians and was endorsed in the primary by more than 100 pastors.

Law Of Attraction ? Your Wish Is Your Command ? What's On CD 8 ...

WARNING! THIS BLOG IS NOT FOR EVERYONE? IT IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT WANT TO TAKE 100% FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR EVERYTHING IN THEIR LIVES? IF YOU BLAME ANYTHING FOR YOUR FAILURES IN LIFE WHETHER IT BE POLITICS, THE ECONOMY, LIFE TRAUMAS OR ANY OTHER KIND OF OUTSIDE INFLUENCE ? DO NOT READ THIS BLOG IT IS NOT FOR YOU ? BUT IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO TAKE 100% RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKE FULL CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE AND LEARN HOW YOU CAN BE DO AND HAVE ANYTHING & EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN LIFE ? THEN YOU WILL BENEFIT GREATLY AND YOU SHOULD READ THIS BLOG DAILY.
your wish is your command

Kevin Trudeau starts out this part of CD 8 of Your Wish Is Your Command by saying next you can have what is called a dreamboard. A dreamboard is something you can have in your office or your house and this is where you put pictures of what you potentially want like and island, yacht dream home etc. You create this with your hands and you can take out pictures of yourself and place these pictures in with your dreams. In front of the car add yourself and your family into the picture. This whole process of creating with your hands makes the reality because it forces you to think of the things that you want.

Kevin reminds us that you get what you think about most of the time. So what we are trying to do here is to get you to think about what you want most of the time and feel good about it when you think about it. So the technique is really think about what you want with power and intensity and feel good. When you break down the technique, what does it come down to? Think about what you want and feel good about it when you think of it. Because if you are feeling good when you think about what you want that means that you believe that you will get it. If you feel bad about it when you think about what you want then that means that you don?t believe that you will get it. That means your dream is too big, it?s not in the sweet spot or you still have to work on your belief by doing the various things that we talked about. That means your ball of negative energy is still way too big. Kevin then tells a story about various ways to feel good about your dreams.

When you think about it and feel good about it the law of attraction will make it come in, as long as you don?t worry about the time frame and feel good about it, it will happen. If you are thinking about a specific thing you are also putting out a feeling. You? are putting out a vibration a feeling for this specific item. The universe will not only bring you the specific item but it will also bring you situations, circumstances, relationships, events, experiences and people that give you the same or a similar feeling. Feelings that you are vibrating. So when you are putting out vibrations that make you feel great you are getting back feelings and vibrations that make you feel great. Very very powerful.

Kevin says if you want to focus on one thing it should be to feel good now. If you don?t feel good that just means that you are not thinking about the right things. This is when you should use the Callahan technique and the appreciation exercise. Kevin then ends this CD by telling the what do I feel luck about and the billionaire from Malaysia story.

What I enjoyed most about this part of CD 8 of Your Wish Is Your Command:

What I enjoyed most about this part of the CD was the stories Kevin told they all hit home and they all were very educational and entertaining. I also enjoyed the explanation on how to insert yourself into your dreamboard and how powerful this technique is.

What I got the most out of this part of CD 8 of Your Wish Is Your Command:

What I got the most out of this part of the CD was that actually constructed my own dreamboard and placed it the a wall in my bedroom. The process was kind of tedious but I enjoyed the process and it turned out pretty good. I also feel pretty good when I look at it every morning. I think this is a pretty powerful technique. I am anxious to start crossing things off of my dream board as I get them.

Again, I hope this post was helpful to you. If it was feel free to share this post and like it, Pin it etc.

Surviving Business Travel | MacPsych

Prompted by my review of Kayak the other day, I made some notes about my various ways of coping with the volume of business travel I experience.

And that?s the key word. Experience. You learn from your travel mistakes, and sighing into your poorly-made airline coffee, swear to yourself that you?ll never, ever do it again.

So I made a list of the things I thought would be useful to pass on via the blog, to spare you from poorly-made airline coffee or any other travel-related pain.

For me, there are a number of challenges that raise their ugly heads when you have to travel for work:

  • Keeping productive and in touch while on the move
  • Dealing with the ?dead time? you experience while queueing and waiting
  • Managing your own work-life balance

This is not a finite list by any means, but I used it as a way to prompt my thoughts on what I do to deal with them.

1. Plan. And plan again.

I?ve found it incredibly useful to book flights so as to respect my other commitments. I?m normally in the lucky position of booking my own business travel. I can therefore plan my flights and train journeys in a way that works for me. In practice, this means no late arrivals at hotels past dinner time, no 5am flights and no meetings the day after an epically late arrival the night before. Sounds simple, but if you don?t manage your schedule, you?ll find yourself bouncing between travel commitments and cursing your lack of planning.

Similarly, plan for being let down. Never gamble with airline schedules or train timetables ? they?ll let you down every time! Build in plenty of contingency time for transfers, journeys to and from the airport and have a plan B route you can take.

I?ve already shared my love of Kayak, especially as it pulls together a sensible itinerary for you. The included venue details will ensure you never get lost and calendar entries mean you can share you travel plans with others. Your smartphone can then be your one-stop-shop for your travel plans, cutting down on the need to bring reams of printed documents.

2. Pack for success

I use a packing list in OmniFocus that ensures I never forget anything of importance. It?s not a long list, but if it?s noted, I don?t have to waste time checking I have remembered everything. It also cuts back on time wasted packing. Yes, this may sound like overkill. But if you?re packing early in the morning or late at night, it?s simplest to just grab what you need according to a pre-defined list. And you definitely don?t want to arrive at your destination needing to buy a mobile phone charger. Or more importantly, frantically looking for a pharmacy to sell you important medication!

I also regularly prune things from this list if I have found they were?t absolutely needed. It keeps things light and simple.

A phrase I never thought I would type on this blog is ?pack your clothes with a capsule wardrobe in mind?. What the hell? Well a capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing that compliments itself and with minimal effort you can look the part. In practice, it means only bringing clothes that go together and repurposing items for different times of the day. A fresh shirt with the same suit trousers and shoes means you have a dinner outfit. No need to bring a second pair of either.

Then try to avoid checking in your suitcase. If you have a carry-on bag, pack it smartly and you avoid the need to drop off luggage at check-in or queue forever to pick it up at the other end. It simply speeds up your journey at both ends. And if your bag is with you at all times, it?s impossible for your favourite airline to lose it, right? Just make sure it will actually fit in the overhead locker ? you can check the approved bag dimensions on most airlines? websites.

3. Use technology to your advantage:

Many airlines now have their own smartphone apps, many of which let you check in and use a virtual boarding card. Use these to check in online and get a good seat (avoiding the middle seat, too near the toilets). If you use Kayak, it will place an automatic reminder in your calendar for checking in the day before travel.

You can then avoid check-in at the airport and wave your smartphone as your boarding card, amazing all around you and looking like someone who?s visiting from the future.

It might sound scary, but consider leaving your laptop at home. I?ve survived by bringing just my iPad and iPhone in the past. You won?t be cut off from civilisation and all your work-related resources. With internet access, you can use Dropbox to access important files. Or better still, plan ahead and make sure all important documents are on the iPad before you leave.

Bring a bluetooth keyboard if you think you?ll need to do a lot of typing. While this can add some more weight, it gives you the flexibility of just using the tablet where a laptop would be awkward (i.e. reading while standing).

Consider getting an adaptor for presenting via a projector or simply bring your presentation on a USB memory stick.

Wherever possible, don?t pack paper (documents, magazine or books) if you can deal with them electronically. They add weight and rarely add value. There?s nothing more frustrating than re-packing unused business documents on your return journey. If your job requires you to have lots of brochures or similar materials, think about sending them ahead.

4. Make your deadtime productive

Travel inherently involves lots of waiting around. My number one rule here is to never, ever shop in airports. They?re invariably more expensive than the high street. Shopping in airports is draining and not at all rewarding. Instead, use the time spent waiting and queuing for something productive. This can be an activity (e.g. reading key business docs from your tablet or a novel you?re enjoying, listening to some favourite music) or simply engage in some mindfulness and reflection. If you?re like me, the latter will help calm you down in a stressful environment.

If you need to get work done, you?ll be amazed at what you can accomplish while waiting for flights if you have an iPad. I?ve frequently done a weekly review using OmniFocus. I?ve written blog posts. I?ve also designed entire workshops. And last year, I spent many travel hours editing the final version of my doctoral dissertation.

If you can, use an airline business lounge to get some quiet time and make any phone calls far away from disruptive flight announcements. See below for more on this. There you can usually access something to eat and drink, charge up your gadgets and get some wifi. If you experience a significant delay, it might be worth paying to enter a lounge ? some, such as Priority Pass, let you pay per visit.

5. Travel in Comfort

Okay, now I know this won?t apply to everyone, but I think it?s worth signing up with relevant frequent flyer schemes so you can benefit from the flights you need to take. Build up, and keep frequent flyer status with airlines, so you can get priority boarding, access to business lounges and be considered for upgrades when available. You can also check-in faster and often get through security via status lanes.

Using a platinum Amex card, I have matched status for hotel chains and access to hundreds of airline lounges around the world. Yes, you have to pay for the card each year, but for me it?s worth it. Your mileage may vary, but it?s worth investigating if this will make your travel experience less painful and more productive.

If you have hotel status, you can get free breakfasts, room upgrades and late checkout. All can make a business-based stay more appealing. If you sleep well, you?ll work better. So don?t be afraid to request a room that meets your needs. For example, I always ensure my hotel room is far away from the lift/elevators and not facing out onto a busy street.

6. Let people know where you are

Another relatively basic point, but it?s important to let colleagues and clients know you?re traveling. Change your out of office email notice to something specific, explaining your availability while away. If you need to, spell out the best time to call you if time zones are going to be an issue. Change your voicemail in the same way. Otherwise you?ll leave people with the false impression that a) you?re contactable whenever or b) you?ve dropped off the face of the planet when you don?t respond to their emails.

7. Look after yourself

An unfortunate side-effect of business travel is being away from home, sometimes for several days at a time. The temptation can be to keep working in the evenings if you?re away from your loved ones and usual surroundings. But this is the perfect time to do a little exploration in the neighbourhood. Go for a walk, especially if you?ve been seated in meetings all day. This will help you sleep and give you time to think.

If you do find yourself several timezones away from home, be brave and push back on invitations to calls that fall either very early or very late in your local day. Especially where these are internal, with colleagues.

If you?re lucky enough to stay in a hotel with a gym, consider bringing minimal kit with you and go use it. I have a favourite hotel in Dublin that I stay in when over on business. It?s not the best hotel in the world, certainly not 5-star but has a great little spa in the basement with steam room and sauna. If I get just 30 minutes in there at the end of the day, I sleep like a baby.

Again, for significant journeys, prepare your body for the timezone changes. It can be tempting, but avoid alcohol on longer flights and just stick to water. You?ll feel significantly better and fresher on landing if you do. Think ahead to the timezone to which you?re travelling and start living that way as soon as you get to the airport. There?s a good article on preparing for and minimising jet lag here.

I?ve learnt to my cost to never try to recover from a transatlantic trip the same day. In the past, I?ve assumed I could sleep on a flight home from the US and bounce back into work. It just doesn?t work that way. Your body betrays you and you end up zombified.

So? an amateur?s guide to surviving business travel. Hope this was useful ? let me know in the comments if you have any additional tips or tricks that help you survive your own business trips.

Jim O'Neill Isn't Too Worried About A Middle East Conflict Causing Oil Prices To Spike

Jim O'Neill, the economist behind the BRICs acronym, earned his Ph.D by studying oil prices.

In his latest Viewpoints note, he responded to people's concerns about an escalating Iran-Israel conflict and how it might cause oil prices to rise.

O'Neill is pretty sanguine on the matter.?

He writes in his latest Viewpoints note:

"...I have noticed an increase in the number of deleted emails that purport to increased confidence from Middle Eastern experts about an Israeli strike on Iran, with some suggesting it could be very soon. In view of the events percolating elsewhere in the region, especially Syria, it is not clear to me why this would be an especially wise thing to do, but what do I ? or perhaps anyone ? know about such matters?

Just before I went away in the middle of last week, I received a very interesting Harvard-Belfer report about a coming oil glut. Entitled ?Oil, the Next Revolution?, it included a lot of evidence to support those that believe ? as I do ? that the long period of rising prices in the past decade have caused sufficient supply-side responses (as well as demand side), so that the last problems people should be worrying about are oil supplies and oil prices. I have also read some rebuttals, but they are heavy in technical jargon and don?t persuade me.

I find myself wondering, if we could ever put this Iran-Israel talk out of the market?s minds permanently (probably a ridiculous notion), how much would oil prices drop?"

Basically, he thinks that already high prices have brought on plenty of extra capacity. Those high prices have also caused those on the demand side to adjust.? And furthermore, his last point implies that there is already a steep risk premium priced into the price of oil.

My business coach keeps telling me to get my website up, but I don't ...

14 Aug

By Agnes Ikotun

And rightfully so on both counts! As a coach or therapist, you have the big vision of helping a lot of people and tons of ideas to get there. You know that the internet is a good place to get your message out there in a big way, but you are not a designer, writer or web technician (and you don?t want to be!) Maybe you have tried to get your website up, but aren?t happy with the results because it just doesn?t reflect the real deal you.

Get VisibilityYou want to get e-visible and to stand out online?

?someone to present you and your business in a way that is unique and as special as you and your services. Most of all, you?ve got to do it using a minimum of your time ? time that is better spent developing and growing your business and working with your clients. In other words, doing rewarding, valuable, and yes, income-producing activities.

The answer to this challenge is to find the right experts who can provide you with an online presence that truly reflects who you are and what you stand for, so you can attract the clients you want to serve and who really need your services. Your checklist needs to also include finding a one stop service so that you don?t have to coordinate all the work of your online presence: your website, blog, free offers, e-zines, newsletters, and all the myriad of marketing materials necessary for maximum e-visibility.

How can you find the right e-visibility experts?

Finding the right experts isn?t always easy, so you?ve got to be sure to ask the right questions, which is tough to do if you don?t know what the right questions are. Here are a few to help you get started:

? What can you do to maximize my e-visibility? The right experts for you will be able to list a multitude of ideas and directions to take to get you effectively online.

? Do you have any experience with online marketing for coaches and therapists? You are looking for a team that has technicians (who are rarely good designers), designers (who frequently not good technicians) and writers who know how to write in your voice so your site sounds like you and not someone else. You also want a team that knows the ins and outs and special requirements of authentic internet marketing for coaches and therapists

? How many people do I have to work with on your team? Avoid hiring separate technician, designer, branding specialist and writers ? coordinating this effort becomes overwhelming and often the separate services don?t play well together. You are looking for a one stop service where you are working with a project manager who is your main contact AND who keeps you updated.

? How do I know my presence will represent my brand and me authentically? It?s going to take a special team to provide online presence that is authentic to you ? a team that understands where you are coming from, your business goals, and your style. You?ll want someone who has those capabilities.

Besides the background information below about Tulsi Gabbard, she is the first Hindu now voted into Congress and member of Iskcon, from Hawaii. This is a great step for those followers of Vedic Dharma, and should also be an inspiration to others, both here in America and in India.

Sri Nandanandana dasa (Stephen Knapp)

The Unique, Historic, and Inspiring Life of Tulsi Gabbard

Tulsi is a public servant by nature who possesses the humility to respectfully listen to both sides of a debate, the experience to handle any challenge, and the courage to make the right decision and get the job done.Dedication to Service

Tulsi has dedicated her life to serving others.

Tulsi learned from a young age the importance of serving others and living aloha. Inspired and motivated by this spirit of aloha, Tulsi took this lesson to heart, and has tried to live her life dedicated to serving the people of Hawai?i.

From a very young age, Tulsi has shown a passion for public service. her commitment to serving the community and making a positive impact has influenced every major decision in her life. her service has included working with at-risk youth, joining the Hawai?i National Guard and deploying twice to the Middle East, being elected to the Hawai?i State Legislature and the Honolulu City Council, having the honor of serving Hawaii?s people in the U.S. Senate as legislative aide to Senator Daniel K. Akaka, and continuing her ongoing work and leadership on environmental issues and projects. The Early Years

Tulsi was born in 1981 in Leloaloa, American Samoa, the fourth of five children born to Carol and State Senator Mike Gabbard. at the age of two, the family moved to Hawai?i, where they first settled in Wahiawa on Royal Palm Drive, where Tulsi?s sister, the family?s youngest, was born.

Learning First-Hand About Small Business

Tulsi learned the challenges and rewards of small business at an early age, helping her parents with two successful family businesses, including ?Hawaiian Toffee Treasures.? The long hours, hard work, and uncertainties inherent in getting a small business off the ground gave Tulsi first-hand experience in the business world and prompted her to focus on business in college, graduating in 2010 from Hawai`i Pacific University with a degree in International Business.

The Youngest Person Ever Elected to the Hawaii State Legislature

After her unprecedented election to the Hawai`i State Legislature in ?02, Tulsi represented District 42 in West Oahu. she was an effective, admired, and hard-working legislator who served on the Education, Higher Education, Tourism, and Economic Development committees.

A Truly Remarkable Military Career Highlighted by Self-sacrifice and Bravery

In 2004, when Tulsi?s fellow soldiers from the 29th Brigade were called to war in Iraq, Tulsi volunteered to join them. she didn?t need to put her life on the line. she could have stayed in the State House of representatives. but in her heart, she felt it was more important to stand in solidarity with her fellow soldiers than to climb the political ladder.

Her two deployments to the war-torn and dangerous Middle East revealed both Tulsi?s natural inclination to self-less service and her ability to perform well in situations demanding confidence, courage, and the ability to perform well as a member of a team. The same maturity and character that served Tulsi well in the Middle East makes her exceptionally effective in the political world.

Serving Hawai`i?s people in the U.S. Senate as legislative aide to Senator Daniel Akaka

Tulsi and Senator Akaka, shown here in 2006.

In 2006, Tulsi went to Washington D.C. to serve in the U.S. Senate as legislative aide to Senator Daniel K. Akaka. There, she advised Senator Akaka on issues relating to energy independence, homeland security, the environment, and veteran affairs. Tulsi was proud to serve with Senator Akaka and continues to be inspired by his mentorship and deep love and aloha for the people of Hawai?i and his commitment to public service.

Protecting Our ?Aina ? Co-founding the Healthy Hawai`i Coalition

Tulsi testing sand quality at Kailua Beach, 2003.

At the age of 19, Tulsi co-founded Healthy Hawai?i Coalition (HHC), a non-profit grassroots organization whose mission is to protect the environment and improve individual and community health. Tulsi was instrumental in developing HHC?s watershed education curriculum, which has been presented to more than 50 public and private schools statewide. Through her Healthy Hawai`i Coalition, Tulsi is active on issues impacting public health and the environment within communities across the state.

Serving on The Honolulu City Council

Councilwoman Gabbard presently serves on the Honolulu City Council.

After returning home from her second deployment to the Middle East in 2009, Tulsi offered to serve on the Honolulu City Council and was elected into office on November 3, 2010. Tulsi currently serves as Chair of the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee, as Vice Chair of the Budget committee and is a member of the Zoning and Public Works committee. In her capacity as committee chair, Tulsi has taken the lead on many important issues such as medical waste, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), dengue fever, and creating new economic opportunities through Honolulu?s first Sister City Summit.

Tulsi is an Ideal Public Servant who Listens to the People she Serves

Tulsi possesses a maturity and self-confidence that leaves her more intent on listening to what others have to say than in having her own views heard. her life experiences have made Tulsi the ideal public servant: she is very comfortable with herself and is able to listen to others with genuine empathy and compassion.

Tulsi possesses the rare combination of youth and experience. with a lifetime?s experiences seemingly compressed into three decades, it is easy to see why many people perceive in Tulsi Gabbard a maturity and depth beyond her years.

A PROVEN RECORD OF LEADERSHIP & SELF-SACRIFICE

Tulsi Gabbard has a proven record of leadership and self-sacrifice. a former state legislator and present councilwoman, decorated war veteran Tulsi Gabbard was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal for her first tour in Iraq, earned a commission as an officer, was the first woman to ever receive an award of appreciation by the Kuwaiti military, and was commissioned as a Captain in the National Guard.

her successful ?02 campaign made Tulsi the youngest person ever elected to the Hawai`i State Legislature.

Perceiving the terrorist attacks on 9/11 as ?defining events for my generation,? Tulsi joined the Hawai`i National Guard in 2003, volunteering to put her life on the line to help protect her country and state.

Tulsi excelled, in Basic Training, graduating top of her class in B Company. she then completed Advanced Individual Training in Texas in medical logistics and graduated at the top of her class as the Distinguished Honor Graduate.

on July 4, 2004, when her first term in the State Legislature was coming to a close, Tulsi learned that soldiers of the 29th Brigade Combat Team, with whom she had trained, sacrificed, and bonded, were being deployed to Iraq. To her dismay, Tulsi learned that her unit, the Medical Command, would not be deployed with the rest of the Brigade. Tulsi remembers, ?It did not take me long to realize there was no way I could stay home and watch my brothers and sisters in uniform march off to Iraq without me.? true to her nature and loyalty to her fellow soldiers, Tulsi sacrificed an assured re-election to the State Legislature and instead volunteered to deploy with her comrades to the war zone in the Middle East.

by sacrificing her re-election to serve with her National Guard Combat Team in Iraq, Tulsi became the first elected official in the State of Hawai`i to ever step down from public office to voluntarily serve in a war zone.

Tulsi served for 12 months near Baghdad as the 29th Brigade?s Medical Operations specialist and at the end of that tour of duty was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her performance in Iraq.

Back home in 2007, Tulsi attended the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at Ft. McClellan, Alabama and was the first female Distinguished Honor Graduate in the 50-year history of the Academy. This esteemed award recognizes the graduate with the highest marks in leadership, physical fitness, academics, and peer evaluation. In 2008, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Tulsi deployed to the Middle East for a second tour of duty as a Military Police platoon leader charged with training the Kuwait National Guard?s Counter-Terrorism unit.

Soon gaining the respect of the Kuwaiti Guards, Tulsi became one of very few women ever allowed to step foot on the Kuwait military base. so impressed with Tulsi were the Kuwaitis that the Counter-Terrorism Unit presented her with an award of appreciation?the first award ever presented to a woman by the Kuwaiti Guards. In 2011, Tulsi was commissioned a Captain in Hawai`i?s National Guard and served as Company Commander with 75 soldiers reporting to her.

Close to two million women have served in the military and hundreds have given their lives in battle in the service of our country. but never before in the history of our country has a female war veteran been elected to Congress. by electing Tulsi Gabbard, and thus sending to Congress the first female war veteran, the people of Hawai?i will again make history.

Concordia study uncovers the real meaning of Grandma's gift buying in the Holy Land

This press release is available in French.

Montreal, August 7, 2012 Although it may not seem like much, the small wooden figurine Grandma brought back from the Holy Land has been blessed. She gives the souvenir to her grandchildren knowing she has done her job: deliver God into their lives.

A recent study led by Hillary Kaell, an associate professor in the Department of Religion at Concordia University, and published in the Journal of Material Culture looks at why and to whom people give souvenir gifts an area of study that little is known about. For her research, she chose to focus on Christian American women, between the ages of 55 and 75, who travel to the Holy Land and who make souvenir purchasing an important part of their pilgrimage.

"Crucial in this endeavor is how pilgrims negotiate the fluid line between commodity and religious object," says Kaell, who mentions that according to the Israeli Census Bureau, more than 60,000 Canadians travel to Israel and the Palestinian Authority each year?most of whom are Christian pilgrims. "They imbue commercial souvenirs with divine presence therefore creating powerful tools for 'softly' asserting religion in their families' lives. Giving these souvenirs becomes another way to bolster faith."

Kaell based her study on ethnographic research conducted on the road in the Holy Land and then at pilgrims' homes after they had returned. Conversation interviews were held with 99 pilgrims and 34 industry professionals, the majority of the interviews consisting of pre and post trip conversations with pilgrims from five groups (three evangelical and two Catholic), as well as participant observation with two of these groups in the Holy Land.

What she found was that the gifts the women bought in the Holy Land were classified into two major groups: undirected ones for acquaintances and directed ones for family, especially children. These women expressed how they felt responsible for perpetuating their faith in the family driving many of their religious behaviours, such as praying for their children, organizing baptisms and taking grandchildren to church.

The purchasing of the souvenirs in the Holy Land becomes an extension of this behaviour. By giving the gifts the women hope to spark an interest in religion. If the children are reticent to accept religious gifts, the gifts are delivered as souvenirs. The women believe that once accepted and displayed the Holy Land gift can open a way to a conversation with God, which fulfills the pilgrim's desire to pass faith down to the next generation.

"These women are very capable of harnessing the ability to portray the gifts as souvenirs sometimes and religious gifts other times," says Kaell. "A souvenir as a divine-presence filled gift can circumvent the problem of having a religious gift rejectedwhether the child understands the true significance of the gift or not. The key is, a very important reason for their pilgrimage has been fulfilled."

?This fall, Maine, Maryland, Washington and Minnesota will vote on ballot measures about marriage equality. Each has a chance to create a new playbook.?

Excellent, largely realistic first hand account post on TDS about this issue. ?A bit optimistic in places, especially in the appeal to the Federal government:

?As a citizen, I appeal to the authority of the federal government, which, history has shown, must sometimes act to ensure that citizens in all fifty states are guaranteed equal protection and rights under the law.?

but a worthy read nonetheless.

Insurance Company Valuation: Useful Resources | Wall Street Oasis

I currently work in the insurance industry and am trying to break into banking. While I am trying to network with as many industry professionals as possible, in my mind it makes sense to try and network with FIG bankers, FIG focused shops (e.g. KBW, Sandler + O'Neil) and FIG/Insurance/Reinsurance banking teams at BB's.

In the hopes of eventually landing an interview, I want to be as well prepared as possible. I think I have the fit portion down, and I know the general technicals (various sources: WSP Modeling, WSO Technical Guide and Pearl and Rosenbaum). However, I have found that there is not a whole lot of information on how to value insurance companies. I know FIG modeling is supposed to be quite different from modeling any other company and that it tends to be highly nuanced and specialized. However, I'm sure if any of you monkeys ever land an interview exclusively for a FIG group, you will need to know the basics of how to value an insurance company. So here's a list of a few places you can find some excellent information on the sector and valuation. Hope it helps.

Free Resources

  • P&C Insurance Valuation: Richard Goldfarb: This is a great document to start with (I have attached a PDF copy as well) and introduces the main ways to model a P&C insurer. It also goes into some detail on the Dividend Discount Model
  • Damodran?s Dividend Discount Model Spreadsheet: Another very useful resource (I have attached this below as well) as you can tie in what you learn above into an actual model and see how the numbers and assumptions flow through
  • Free Publications: Look for industry publications on the industry and specifically trends in M&A and insurance banking. Deloitte, PWM, most reinsurance brokers and others publish periodic reports worth reading. I have attached a 2012 insurance industry M&A outlook report by Deloitte.
  • Paid Resources

  • Breaking Into Wall Street ? Financial Institutions Modeling: While I am sure that WSPs FIG modeling package is just as good, I chose BIWS because it was cheaper ($247 vs $399) and makes direct reference to modeling insurance companies in the product description. I found the videos thorough, easy to watch and very informative. Plus if you follow along on the spreadsheets you really learn a lot. Definitely worth springing for if you?re serious about killing a FIG interview.
  • SNL: If you have access to this at work or feel inclined to drop money on a subscription (I wouldn?t), they have an excellent video (?Introduction to Insurance Valuation? that covers a lot of the important valuation basics. It?s also great to learn the appropriate valuation metrics (Price/Tangible Book) and about individual companies.
  • Good luck!

Iran tests upgraded version of short-range missile

(AP) ? Iran claimed Saturday it has successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range ballistic missile with improved accuracy, increasing the Islamic Republic's capability to strike both land and naval targets.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said the solid-fueled Fateh-110 has a range of 300 kilometers (185 miles). He claimed the weapon could strike with pin-point precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.

"By reaching this generation of the Fateh-110, a new capability has been added to our armed forces in striking sea and land targets," state TV quoted Vahidi as saying. "Few countries in the world possess the technology to build such missiles."

Iran's military leaders have said they believe future wars will be air- and sea-based and Tehran has sought to upgrade its air defense systems and naval power in anticipation of such a possibility.

Iran has also been pushing to upgrade its missiles, which already can target Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East. The Pentagon released a report in June noting significant advances in Iranian missile technology, acknowledging that the Islamic Republic has improved the accuracy and firing capabilities of its missiles.

The Fateh-110, or Conqueror, is a single-stage solid-propellant, surface-to-surface missile put into service in 2002. The earlier version of the domestically-produced missile had a range of 200 kilometers (120 miles). The weapon was developed by Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization.

Iran also has a variety of longer-ranged missiles including a Shahab-3 variant with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) that can reach Israel and southern Europe. Many of its missiles could in theory carry a nuclear warhead.

Iran considers both the United States and Israel as potential adversaries. Neither country has ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which they claim is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement that it was concerned by the reports of the missile test.

"This move calls into question again Iran's stated commitment to a purely peaceful nuclear program," the ministry said Saturday. "We remain concerned that Iran continues to develop missile technology with the clear intention of extending the range and sophistication of its missiles."

Israel is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) away from Iran's western borders, while the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, some 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Iranian shores in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's military leaders have threatened that Israel "would disappear from the Earth" if it attacks Iran. Military commanders have also warned that 35 American military bases in the Middle East are within Iran's missile range and would be destroyed within seconds after any U.S. attack on Iran.

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes and a fighter plane.

Signs changing fast for Voyager at solar system edge

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? Two of three key signs of changes expected to occur at the boundary of interstellar space have changed faster than at any other time in the last seven years, according to new data from NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft.

For the last seven years, Voyager 1 has been exploring the outer layer of the bubble of charged particles the sun blows around itself. In one day, on July 28, data from Voyager 1's cosmic ray instrument showed the level of high-energy cosmic rays originating from outside our solar system jumped by five percent. During the last half of that same day, the level of lower-energy particles originating from inside our solar system dropped by half. However, in three days, the levels had recovered to near their previous levels.

A third key sign is the direction of the magnetic field, and scientists are eagerly analyzing the data to see whether that has, indeed, changed direction. Scientists expect that all three of these signs will have changed when Voyager 1 has crossed into interstellar space. A preliminary analysis of the latest magnetic field data is expected to be available in the next month.

"These are thrilling times for the Voyager team as we try to understand the quickening pace of changes as Voyager 1 approaches the edge of interstellar space," said Edward Stone, the Voyager project scientist based at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif. "We are certainly in a new region at the edge of the solar system where things are changing rapidly. But we are not yet able to say that Voyager 1 has entered interstellar space."

The levels of high-energy cosmic ray particles have been increasing for years, but more slowly than they are now. The last jump -- of five percent -- took one week in May. The levels of lower-energy particles from inside our solar system have been slowly decreasing for the last two years. Scientists expect that the lower-energy particles will drop close to zero when Voyager 1 finally crosses into interstellar space.

"The increase and the decrease are sharper than we've seen before, but that's also what we said about the May data," Stone said. "The data are changing in ways that we didn't expect, but Voyager has always surprised us with new discoveries."

Voyager 1, which launched on Sept. 5, 1977, is 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers) from the sun. Voyager 2, which launched on Aug. 20, 1977, is close behind, at 9.3 billion miles (15 billion kilometers) from the sun.

"Our two veteran Voyager spacecraft are hale and healthy as they near the 35th anniversary of their launch," said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. "We know they will cross into interstellar space. It's just a question of when."

The Voyager spacecraft were built by JPL, which continues to operate both. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology. The Voyager missions are a part of the NASA Heliophysics System Observatory, sponsored by the Heliophysics Division of the Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Websites are a brilliant business tool. Many businesses use websites in order to provide to their customers in one of the largest customer sales points on the planet, the internet. Everyday many people go online to find the products they want to own and purchase them, often for the cheapest price available.

Using the internet is what businesses have to do in order to reach new customers. Many people will talk about a business but if you?ve never heard of it you want to look them up online. Finding them online is great because it could mean you get the products you want.

Online sales are great for businesses because the website handles most of the work. All that is required is a group of call centre workers to answer customer queries and then a business can take orders online all day and night without the need for someone to be there.

Businesses using the internet gain access to customers they?ve never had before. This is great because they can extend the reach of their business and provide to those that may not necessarily have heard of them. This is the overall aim of every business when they create a website and is great for increasing the size of one.

There are loads of businesses that use the internet to reinvent themselves. The reason for this is that not many people take notice of high street shops if they?re out of their way. A website can be used to make the shop look great and attract new customers online.

Creating a great business brand is something that many businesses want to achieve. If they can create a great brand then they will gain the interest of customers that won?t have taken notice of them before and increase their business.

There are a number of different seo agency companies out there that can all help build up your business online and gain it more customers online.

Student Loan Debt Is Preventing Economic Recovery | Credit.com ...

Despite a few positive indicators, America?s economic recovery is still lagging. The Federal Reserve predicts the economy will grow 2.1% in 2012, but it?s not exactly the boost that we?ve been waiting for.

One of the causes for this sluggishness appears to be the large amount of student loan debt that many consumers of all ages are struggling with, making it tougher for them to fulfill their professional and financial potential. This point was highlighted last Wednesday by Rohit Chopra, the student loan ombudsman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, in an interview with the Financial Times. He said, ?student debt may be more intertwined with the housing market than we realize, and it may prove more important every day to understand that connection.?

In fact, student loan debt is causing serious problems for the economy in several ways. When people are worried about paying their student loan bills, they?re not able to make other kinds of investments that have traditionally sparked our economy ? such as buying a home, purchasing retail goods, and even investing. What we?re seeing instead is that so much of these borrowers? discretionary income is going toward their student loan payments that they don?t have room left in their budget for much else.

Free Credit Check & MonitoringWith unemployment rates remaining high, particularly for young people, many college graduates are still out of work or are treading water in low-paying jobs. That creates a vicious cycle where young professionals are unable to make the financial contributions made by those of previous generations. This lack of spending only prolongs the current nationwide economic slump.

As if that?s not concerning enough, experts are now reporting that the student loan bubble shows signs of being similar to the subprime mortgage mess. Over the last decade, while many private lenders loosened the credit qualifications necessary to obtain student loans, borrowers were not always given enough information to accurately predict how much they?d be able to pay back once they left college. The result is that there are many student loan borrowers who have defaulted or who are getting close to doing so.

So if you?re among those who are struggling with student loan debt, what can you do? Well, luckily there are a few programs in place that might help you get some breathing room. One of the most impactful is the Income-Based Repayment program, which allows you to reduce your monthly payments to about 15% of your disposable income. To qualify, you have to demonstrate partial financial hardship and submit an application.

And while that program is for federal student loans only, many private lenders are willing to work with you to agree on a modified repayment plan if necessary. Furthermore, what might be even more helpful to some borrowers is the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program ? which allows for any remaining loan balance you have after 10 years to be forgiven if you have worked in a qualifying public service job during that time. Careers in federal or state government, including teaching jobs, and those in non-profit organizations generally qualify for this program. For more information, see the Department of Education website.

Ultimately, we can hope that political leaders do not ignore Rohit Chopra?s warning: ?policymakers cannot sit by as passive observers.? Continued action will be necessary to address the student loan debt problem and kickstart the economy.
