In an effort keep the troubled LightSquared from the brink of defaulting on its debt, its founder will step down from the company. While it doesn't look immediate, (people "familiar with the negotiations" are using the word "eventually") it's Philip Falcone's latest attempt to extend a debt-term violation that expires this morning. According to the same sources, if the initial extension is okayed, Falcone and LightSquared's lenders are aiming for a greater period of around 18 months to repay $1.6 billion in loans and pass the FCC's requirements for its network. The company's board is still deliberating on whether to accept the deal, which would stop the company filing for bankruptcy protection. Unfortunately, it looks like those new 4G network dreams just got hazier.

Question: I?m interested in advancing my career. I am currently working on an individual development plan for the short and long term, but my company has limited resources available to support employees? goals. How can I continue to grow and develop in my career? ? Business Process Manager

I?ve been going back over transcripts from four years of women?s leadership webinars, looking for an interesting quote from each of the over 50 women leaders who have made guest speaker appearances. These women leaders hold senior-level roles in the corporate, academic and non-profit sectors but share some things in common, namely the desire to share what they have learned about career and leadership development, and to support the success of women coming up in the leadership pipeline.

As I highlighted my favorite quote from each of the speakers, some patterns emerged. Their career development advice fell into ten categories. The topics are:

• Establish supportive networks
• Identify your ideal career niche
• Build your brand
• Deliver valuable business results
• Be an agent for positive change in your organization
• Make your accomplishments and value visible
• Manage upward
• Speak up
• Take a ?seat at the table? and use your influence

Each of these topics is a valuable action step to include in a career advancement plan. But by far the most popular category of advice given by the speakers was self-advocacy, which was neatly summarized by the Vice President for Research at an academic institution, when she said, ?Own your own career trajectory. You have to make your own opportunities.?

Take charge of your career trajectory.

I have written before about my belief that the greatest career roadblock women face is ?The Emerging Leader?s Quandary?: when you can?t get a higher-level job without leadership experience, but you can?t get the experience without the job.

I have known many women who were smart and hardworking, but nonetheless believed that if they just worked hard enough for long enough, someone from management would eventually stop by, hand them a promotion and say, ?You?re a leader now!?

If your career plan relies on waiting for this to happen, you may need to plan on waiting a long time. You can?t afford to wait for permission or an invitation to move beyond your current role or take on more responsibility.

The fastest way to break out of the Emerging Leader?s Quandary is to take charge of your own career and leadership development. Here are six tips shared by senior women leaders, for being in the driver?s seat in your career.

1. Have a career plan:
?Make a plan or someone will make one for you. A mentor told me that years ago and I have always lived my life in accordance with that. It starts with making choices with each and every opportunity you?re presented. Many of us are over-achievers, so the minute something comes up, you want to throw up your hands and say, ?Sure, I?ll do it.? You want to be the good corporate citizen. But you don?t always have to do that. There?s a balance that you can strike where you say ?yes? to the activities that are not in conflict with those things that are important to you.?? 2. Take career risks:
?I?ve taken a lot of risks with my career. I believe in ?large risk, large reward?. No matter what happens, do a great job, give it your all, and people will remember you. Do you want to be in the driver?s seat or do you want to be a passenger?? ? VP of Strategy, security industry

3. Choose one thing that is most important in your next role:
?Choose the one thing that is most important to you in your next role, be it location, be it a particular function, a particular level in the organization, whether you?d like direct reports next, or whatever it is ? and then, be as flexible as you can about the rest.? ? 4. Market yourself, but stay on theme
?You have to know what you want in your career. Market yourself. Stay on theme. Interesting is no longer a good criteria (for taking a role). Know what experience you need and what kind of jobs will give you that experience.? ? VP of Finance, energy industry

5. Don?t be afraid to ask for what you want:
?Sometimes, you have to ask for it. If you see something, don?t expect it will be there for you or it will be given to you. One very important part of my career was when I decided to go back to my professional role but not full time. I really was afraid to ask for it, but somebody said, ?How will you know unless you ask?? So, I went in. I presented a proposal along with someone else who I knew wanted the same thing as I did, and we proposed a job share. If I hadn?t asked, I would probably have just either gone back full time or done something I wasn?t very comfortable with personally. So, don?t be afraid to ask for it. Be prepared. Have your plan. 6. Put yourself forward to be developed as a leader:
?Don?t be shy or hesitant about putting yourself forward as someone who?s interested in being developed as a leader. Sometimes, there?s not a formal way to do that in your organization, so be sure to communicate that to people that you work with. Let them know that you see yourself as someone who has that potential and interest to develop in that area. Waiting for something to happen to you may well bring disappointment.? ? Fiat aims for European break-even in 2014

TURIN, Italy (AP) ? Fiat's alliance with U.S. carmaker Chrysler should allow its European business to reach break even by 2014, CEO Sergio Marchionne told shareholders on Wednesday

The two car makers, which entered an alliance nearly three years ago, expect to sell between 4.1 million and 4.4 million vehicles this year, up from just over 4 million in 2011.

The forecast takes into account the declining European market, which Marchionne says is expected to contract for the fifth consecutive year to around 13 million.

Trends were clear in sales figures for the month of March announced this week. Chrysler Group sales jumped 35 percent to the best month in four years. Fiat domestic deliveries, on the other hand, dropped to the lowest level in 32 years as Italians face recession, higher taxes and rising gas prices. Fiat domestic and European deliveries also were interrupted by a monthlong tractor-trailer strike.

Marchionne aims to make cars in Italy for export to North America, where factories are running near full capacity compared with 50 percent in Italy. Toward that end, Fiat reached a deal at the end of last year for more flexible work rules at all its Italian factories.

"This process will allow us to cleanup definitively the inefficiencies in out industrial network and return to break even with the European car business by 2014," Marchionne said.

Fiat SpA reported strong earnings last year thanks to Chrysler's turnaround, but lost money in its home market, Europe.

Marchionne also told shareholders Fiat was continuing to look for a new partner in Asia, and that the first Russian cars in a joint venture would be produced next year.

Fiat and Chrysler's combined 2011 sales made it the seventh-largest car company in the world. Marchionne aims to be capable of building 6 million cars a year by 2014 ? the figure he says is necessary to be competitive in the global market.

"We are no longer a marginal player," Marchionne told shareholders. "We have become one of the strongest and most competitive car producers, with a level of technology among the most innovative and advanced in the world."

Marchionne said the two companies had achieved synergies of ?1.4 billion ($1.9 billion) in the last two years ? a billion of which was reached last year alone. The CEO said the integration process will be half completed by the end of this year.

Fiat ? which has a 58.5 percent stake in Chrysler ? maintained its 2012 targets of ?77 billion ($102 billion) in revenue and net profit of ?1.2 billion to ?1.5 billion ($1.6 billion to $2 billion).

Fiat could raise its stake in Chrysler another 3.3 percent this year, Marchionne said. Fiat has the option to raise its stake by 3.3 percent every six months beginning July 1 by buying up shares owned by the auto worker union's pension health care fund, which currently controls the remaining 41.5 percent.

OK everyone, its 2012 ? I hope that every organization and business reading this has a Social Media Director. Other variations on this job title are Online Community Director, Social Media Strategist, Director of Online Initiatives, Social Media Maven, Online Marketing Guru. When I say ?Social Media Director?, I mean the person in charge of your company?s social media and online presence. Using Wikipedia?s great definition, ?Social media?includes web-based and mobile technologies used to turn?communication?into interactive dialogue.? This means blogs, mobile campaigns and social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter).

Your Social Media Director can be a volunteer, an outside consultant, a college intern, a marketing associate ? or even the business owner or Executive Director herself!

Social media as a field is not very new, but the level to which organizations and companies embrace it and integrate it into their overall marketing plan varies widely.

Whether you are looking to outsource your social media tasks or looking internally, there are certain qualities that are ideal for person managing your online communities.

A successful, effective Social Media Director should have the following characteristics:

1. ? ??Passion for social media. This may seem like a no-brainer, but I am constantly surprised at the number of businesses and organizations that delegate this task to a staff member solely based on job title. Just because you are a public relations whiz or a fabulous fundraiser does not mean that you understand or embrace social media and the technology know-how that comes with it. Social media is not for everyone. Find a Director that ?gets it? and regularly uses these tools in their personal and professional life.

2. ? ??Grammatical and spelling skills (or the sense to get their stuff edited). Just because social media is embraced by the young does not mean that grammatical and spelling errors are acceptable, especially in professional communications. A Social Media Director does not have to be an established writer ? but they must be able to speak articulately and succinctly.

3. ? ??Leadership ability. This ability may not be fully exploited, but a good online community manager will be able to speak up for themselves and for the good of the community. No spineless, wimpy people will succeed in this job!

4. ? ??Confidence (but not over-confidence). When interacting in real-time on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, a good Social Media Director will be able to press that ?post? or ?tweet? button. They will have the confidence (and support from the higher ups). Individuals that have a tendency to over think and second-guess every decision they make will not thrive in the fast-paced, spontaneous social media environment. On the other hand, they need to know when to consult the higher-ups for permission or advice.

5. ? ??Discipline and organization. Writing a blog post on a schedule is a tough thing to do. Coming up with inventive, interesting and compelling content for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and others day in, day out is challenging. An effective Social Media Director will use editorial calendars, scheduling technology and other planning tools to ensure that posts and tweets are being published regularly. Responding to requests, questions and comments takes time and organization to manage. This is not a job for the easily overwhelmed.

6. ? ??Manners. A great Social Media Director will take the time to understand the particular etiquette of each social network and will participate appropriately. They will respond to comments (even mean ones) on their page, blog, etc. with grace and poise.

7. ? ??A level head. At the first sign of trouble, an valuable Social Media Director will not freak out, shove her head into the sand or run for the hills. Managing multiple social media accounts, especially with the expectation that all comments and posts will get a response immediately, can make some people very anxious. They key is to know what you can and what you can?t do, and set the expectations of your online communities as necessary.

8. ? ??Have a thick skin. Comments on social media are often made off-the-cuff without a whole lot of thought or planning going into them, especially on blogs or Facebook pages around controversial topics. Social Media Directors should aim not to take anything personally and to always respond appropriately and not fly off the handle at negative comments. (You can always block/report people for obscene language.)

9. ? ??Accountability. With that thick skin, however, comes accountability ? the willingness to take responsibility for anything that is posted or tweeted. The tendency to pass the buck is high, but a great Social Media Director will swallow their pride and admit their mistakes. (Also, they will take credit for their successes!)

10. ?Curiosity and a continuous hunger to know more. With technology and online tools changing and evolving so rapidly, the best Social Media Directors know they can?t just maintain the status quo. They need to be willing and able to learn, to read and to develop professionally in this field.

Space tourist is just one way to describe Simonyi

SEATTLE (AP) ? Charles Simonyi may still be described as a space tourist even though the Microsoft billionaire has no plans to take a third vacation on the International Space Station and hasn't hung out in outer space for a few years.

He's still obsessed with space and is heavily involved in the Seattle Museum of Flight's new space gallery, which is named in the philanthropist's honor.

Since 2002, Simonyi has been running his own company called Intentional Software that specializes in creating industry-specific computer software, and he recently he took on a new title: book publisher.

The son of a Hungarian physicist, the 63-year-old just made one of his dad's dreams come true by helping translate the senior Simonyi's epic about physics into English.

"A Cultural History of Physics" by Karoly Simonyi, who died in 2001, is a heavy tome with an intimidating name but inside the non-scientist will find lots of pictures and stories that offer a whimsical side of physics.

Flip through the book, which has had five editions in Hungarian and three in German, and you'll find a full-page diagram showing how the scientists of the 17th century enjoyed dismissing each other's theories. A diagram and an explanation by Sir Isaac Newton of how rainbows are formed are on another page.

An illustration of a cat with its hair standing on end may catch your attention toward the end of the book. If you stop to find out why the cat is on the page, you'll find an explanation of quantum mechanics and radioactive decay.

Simonyi says that page is just one of many parts of the book that illustrate his father's sharp sense of humor.

The project was personal for Simonyi but has elements of other things he does for work and fun: it was a challenge, it's about science and it has the potential to help people learn.

The man who led the Microsoft teams that developed Word and Excel also is great at explaining scientific concepts. From the stories he shares about his father, that's a quality he likely inherited from the former physics professor, who Simonyi says inspired generations of Hungarian electrical engineers.

Charles Simonyi left Hungary at 17, and says his interest in space as a child helped him learn English ? two of his first English words were "propellant" and "nozzle." His knowledge of space trivia led him to win a junior astronaut contest at age 13. The prize was a trip to Moscow to meet one of the first cosmonauts, Pavel Popovich.

His next project will be writing a book about his space trips in 2007 and 2009 with Virginia-based Space Adventures, which cost him a total of $60 million. The idea was inspired in part by all the questions he was asked on a website he set up during his space travels called "Charles in Space."

"I love talking about space flight," said Simonyi, who says the privilege of going to space can be measured by the fact that only about 500 people have ever left Earth's atmosphere. "If you've been there, then you kind of have this obligation to tell people about what it's like and share the experience."

Earlier this week, he dropped off a space toilet at the Museum of Flight.

Going to the bathroom in space is quite a bit more complicated than sleeping there, and Simonyi is enthusiastic about sharing all the personal, yet technical, details with anyone curious. He even made a video about the mechanics of bodily functions in zero gravity.

Sleeping is actually easier in space than on earth, Simonyi said.

"You can sleep anywhere in any position ? vertical, horizontal or at an angle," he said, adding that he slept in a room where the Russian space suits were kept. "It was out of the way and pretty quiet. I enjoyed it very much."

Thanks to Simonyi, the museum also has one of the Russian Soyuz space capsules he used to ride back to earth from the space station. Simonyi gave $3 million to the museum to help build the space gallery, and has given the Soyuz capsule, a space suit, space toilet and other artifacts to the museum on a long-term loan.

Eventually the small cone-shaped capsule will sit beside the giant U.S. space shuttle trainer, for which the hangar-sized gallery was built.

Simonyi said he never felt claustrophobic on the space station or in the Russian ships to or from the station.

"I find the spacecraft very comfortable, very cozy," he said.

Nothing about the experience was scary, he said, even though he doesn't consider himself much of a daredevil. He is a pilot, flying both jets and helicopters.

He compared the experience of dropping back to earth in the Russian space capsule to snow skiing, from the s-turns the capsule makes as it falls through the atmosphere to the whooshing sound it makes as the air and heat blast off the surface.

Conversely, the idea of riding in a submarine miles beneath the surface of the ocean ? like James Cameron did recently ? that gives him the willies. "That takes guts," he said.

Sony Xperia Play Gets Android ICS Update

Sony recently announced that users of Sony Xperia Play can now update their device's OS to the latest Android version which is Android 4.0 or better known as Android ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich).

The release of the official beta version of Android 4.0 or Android ICS is in line with Sony's promise to their users that they would be able to utilize the newest version of Android OS in their devices. Aside from Sony Xperia Play, Sony also released a beta version of Android ICS to their other gadgets such as Xperia Neo V, Neo V, and Arc S. The company also mentioned that there were a lot of requests for the Android update for Xperia Play which is the reason they decided to provide it as soon as it was available.

Looking back at childhood memories, I remember April as a fairly wet month. It was a little dark and gloomy, with snow and ice melting, and bouts of wind and rain adding to the bone-chilling cold in the air. Even though spring was around the corner, it was always a bit frosty?yet, the melting ice and snow gave way to patches of green and dull yellows and brown. The rain helped cleanse the muck that had been living under the ice and snow all winter. The wind cleared the air; it circulated what needed to be moved around.

That particular weather beckoned an inner feeling of rebirth and renewal. It called forth a spirit of cleansing; whether that meant the annual spring cleaning of your garage or hall closets, or finally tackling those leftover and unresolved New Year resolutions. Either way, the coming of spring?with budding flowers, new babies and sunny warmth?set forth a cycle of change.

Getting Organized - Creating a Life Folder

If your parent suddenly required long term care in a nursing home tomorrow, do you know what paperwork you would need and where to get it? If you were in an accident tomorrow and required long term care services, or worse were killed, does your family know where everything is? Do they know about every insurance policy and bank account? Even that little Christmas club account. or that $1,000 life insurance policy that you?ve nearly forgotten about yourself?

Whether you?re 18 or 80, having all of your key documents together is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family. This doesn?t mean every bank statement from every account, but it does mean being organized so nothing is missed. The key documents I suggest you gather together are the documents that would be required for you (or your parent) to apply for Medicaid.

If you have everything Medicaid requires, you?ll have everything you need for just about every emergency.

When someone applies for Medicaid, they are required to prove who they are, what they own, what they owe, sources and amounts of income, expenses (particularly if a spouse is still at home), and provide Power of Attorney and / or Guardianship paperwork.

How to Organize your documents

This is the digital age, so if you have access to a printer and scanner, a digital copy is great. For a younger person, or someone in good health, the digital copies may be enough. Be sure to give a copy to your Power of Attorney. Even if you do store these documents electronically, you may still need hard copies readily available to carry with you.

For instance, in the case of your parents or someone you know that may need long term care soon. You will need the documents easily stored to carry with you. I recommend using a [banner]three ring binder, or an expandable file. Keep the binder or file organized by using?plastic sleeves so holes don?t have to be punched in each page. This will also keep the documents from wrinkling or tearing, so they are easier to copy if need be. Use dividers to divide the sections in a way that makes sense to you. I recommend dividing it into the following sections:

• Documents that identify you
• Health insurance documents
• Income
• Assets (you may have sub sections ? one for bank accounts, one for real estate, etc)
• Taxes
• Expenses
• Legal (Power of Attorney, Guardianship documents, wills, etc)

What documents should I keep?

If the Life Folder is being established for someone who doesn?t believe their Power of Attorney?will need these documents any time soon I would recommend the following:

• Copies of all identifying documents (driver?s license, social security card, etc)
• Copies of all insurance cards
• A list of all sources of income ? employer name and address, account numbers for interest income and name of institution distributing this income
• Assets ? a list of all assets owned, account numbers and other pertinent information regarding these assets.? The goal is to describe the asset well enough for your Power of Attorney to know exactly what you own.
• Taxes ? Keep a list of taxes you pay on a regular basis with the identifying account number, such as real estate, how they are paid, to whom, etc.
• Expenses ? Prepare a list of all loans and include the account number, payment amount, due date, who the payment is made to, etc.? Also, prepare a list of your household utility companies and any other expenses you pay regularly.
• Legal ? Keep a copy of all of your legal documents (Power of Attorney, wills, etc)
• Life Insurance ? Prepare a document that includes account numbers, amount of policies, who the beneficiaries are, name of the insurance company, etc.

As you can see, the information that you keep in your Life Folder won?t take up a great deal of room.? Most information will be kept in a list format.? The goal is to make sure your bills continue to be paid and all income continues to be received?in case of an unexpected crisis.

Several years ago, a friend of mine's sister-in-law died suddenly.? She was only 53 years old. She had handled all of the finances for her and her husband.? She kept a Life Folder. In addition to all the required documents, she included little notes of encouragement for her husband, and notes telling him how much he meant to her.?He only read these after she was done. He said those notes helped him to get through some of the dark days he had after her death. Another great reason to have a Life Folder.
