USDA Announces $138 Million in University-Led Biofuel Research (ContributorNetwork)

Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today the department is going to launch five major agricultural and biofuel research and production projects that will be led by several leading public universities in the country. The projects will specifically extend over five years and will help develop regional renewable energy markets in several areas of the U.S.

Vilsack was joined by representatives from the private sector, several research institutions, and the biofuel industry at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Seattle.

The projects will consist of more than $136 million in research and development grants and recipients include the University of Washington ($40 million), Washington State University ($40 million), Iowa State University ($25 million), Louisiana State University ($17.2 million) and the University of Tennessee ($15 million). The grants will come directly from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, both of which were created through the 2008 Farm Bill.

Vilsack spoke about the importance of the projects and what they will mean for boosting American jobs, the economy, and the country's energy future: "We have an incredible opportunity to create thousands of new jobs and drive economic development in rural communities across America by continuing to build the framework for a competitively-priced, American-made biofuels industry. The past two years, USDA has worked to help our nation develop a national biofuels economy that continues to help us out-innovate and out-compete the rest of the world while moving our nation toward a clean energy economy."

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reported the University of Washington will use its $40 million grant to research and develop the use of converting poplar trees into fuel. Washington State will use its grant funding to research using residual wood and wood waste created after logging for aviation fuels. The two university projects will also involve research institutions and corporations, including Weyerhaeuser, which is one of the largest wood processing company, including pulp and paper products, in the world and is based in the state of Washington.

The three other universities will use their portion of the funding to utilize local agriculture and native crops and plants as the center of their biofuel research projects, which includes native perennial grasses in Iowa, cane and sorghum in Louisiana, and switchgrass and woody biomass in Tennessee. Additionally, each project will look to establish new technologies and boost regional renewable energy markets.

Songwriter, gospel singer Jessy Dixon dies at 73

Jessy Dixon, a singer and songwriter who introduced his energetic style of gospel music to wider audiences by serving as pop singer Paul Simon's opening act, died Monday. He was 73.

Miriam Dixon said her brother died Monday morning at his Chicago home. She said he had been sick but declined to provide additional details.

During a more than 50-year career, Dixon wrote songs for several popular singers, including jazz and rhythm and blues singer Randy Crawford. He later wrote songs performed by Cher, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole and Amy Grant.

But it was for his gospel singing ? religious music that combined the rhythmic beat of blues, jazz and soul ? that Dixon first gained attention. It was during an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1972 with his Jessy Dixon Singers that Dixon first came to Simon's attention. For the next eight years, Dixon toured with the pop icon, collaborating on Simon's 'Live Rhymin' Simon' and 'Still Crazy' albums.

Dixon also played keyboard with Earth Wind and Fire and guitarist Phillip Upchurch.

Miriam Dixon said her brother

Dixon, who began studying music at age 5, aspired to be classical pianist but told The Associated Press in a 1997 interview that he always knew his talent was destined for use in the church.

Born March 12, 1938, in San Antonio, Dixon's professional compass was set by gospel music legend James Cleveland, who heard Dixon's teen group perform at a theatre in the south Texas city. Dixon said Cleveland liked the group, but he liked Dixon more and persuaded him to move to Chicago to join his group, the Gospel Chimes, as both a singer and pianist.

Chicago's South Side was the place to be for a gospel musician, especially in the early 1960s.

"Going to church was like going to school," Dixon said. At church, he heard the likes of Mahalia Jackson and blues pioneer Thomas A. Dorsey, who is credited with creating modern gospel singing.

"Reading his (Dorsey's) music and studying it, he was the one who wrote for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Elvis Presley and Pat Boone," Dixon said. "All these people were singing his music and were making it commercial."

Dixon credited the creativity of artists like percussionist Maurice White and blues singer Willie Dixon, no relation, inspired him to compose. He started with choral music for Chicago's Thompson Community Singers, for which he sat at the keyboards. Several of his early songs have become classics, sung in churches across America, including: "Sit At His Feet and be Blessed," "These Old Heavy Burdens" and "I Love to Praise His Name."

His more recent compositions gained him even wider acceptance. Dixon's "I Am Redeemed," released in 1993, lingered on Billboard magazine's gospel chart for more than five years.

After his stint with Simon ended, Dixon rode a wave of increased gospel music interest during the 1980s to build a following in Europe.

During his 1997 interview, Dixon noted that when he first began touring on his own outside the United States in the 1980s, the small audiences didn't have much respect for gospel as religious expression.

"At first it was viewed as entertainment," he said. "But now when I go, they ask me to share my faith as a Christian."

In the United States, Dixon was a long-time fixture on composer and singer Bill Gaither's Gospel Series, video concert broadcast on religious oriented cable television stations.

During his career, Dixon was able to produce five gold records and garner several Grammy nominations.

Dixon, is survived by a brother and sister.

Bill to crack down on cyber-bullies introduced in New York (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? New York State Senator Jeffrey Klein introduced a new "cyber-bullying" bill on Monday, saying outdated pre-digital harassment laws fail to punish bullies who use the Internet and smartphones to torment others.

The New York bill is a response to several highly publicized cases of teen suicides in the aftermath of some form of online bullying. Klein, a Democrat from the Bronx and Westchester, argued that current state law had not been keeping pace with technology as life increasingly moved online.

"If people know there is a tough law on the books and they're going to be punished, they are going to act accordingly," Klein told a news conference outside the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City, where he was joined by members of two anti-bullying organizations.

At least 30 states already have laws dealing with online harassment. At least five have laws dealing explicitly with cyber-bullying, which a study found last year may be even harder on the victims than physical beatings or name-calling.

Under Klein's bill, the crime of stalking in the third degree would be updated to explicitly include harassing a child using electronic communication.

To better reflect the nature of online interactions, the bill removes requirements that the offender initiate the contact and that the victim be a direct recipient of the communication.

Although it is already a crime to "intentionally cause or aid" another person's suicide, the bill would update the state's second-degree manslaughter statute to explicitly include cyber-bullying as a possible cause of such a suicide.

Senator Diane Savino, a Democrat from Staten Island and Brooklyn and a co-sponsor of the bill, said that although bullying has existed "since Cain and Abel," it has been transformed by the Internet and smartphone technology.

A taunting remark in a school playground might be heard by a few and eventually forgotten, she said.. But the same remark posted online can potentially be seen by anyone and linger indefinitely.

Anne Isaacs, whose daughter Jamie, now 15, had to switch schools because of bullies, said online bullying was also much harder to escape than other forms.

"When Jamie would go online to do her homework she would go online and be screaming because messages would come up," said Isaacs, who joined Klein at the press conference.

An attempt to legislate against cyber-bullying at the federal level foundered in 2008, and it has been left to the states to decide how to deal with the problem.

Mary Sue Backus, a law professor at the University of Oklahoma who has studied cyber-bullying, was cited several times in Klein's supporting arguments for his bill. She said in an interview she generally opposed the kind of legislation he was pushing for, which could fail to act as a deterrent and instead have the effect of criminalizing adolescent behavior.

Extreme IT ? Blog Archive ? Human resources manager for the new ...

Recently a lot of contact with the circle of human resource managers, directors, management, teacher and professional trainer, from the mouth, and I understand their situation more or less aware of some of the current manager of our human condition, a very interesting phenomenon is the

Circle a little "celebrity" is the most job-hopping "master" and have their own not stay, but also by businesses in the "trial period proved not meet the employment conditions or can not do this job work" to terminate the labor relationship. I am part of

Do an analysis, found that 90% of the problems are not because of our own professional, can not adapt to various changes in the environment, resulting in "flash in the pan" phenomenon. Concluded with the following points:

First, the experience of first

Most new recruits human resources manager at the entry after the original unit did not escape mode of thinking and working methods, often the original company forms a new unit inside the system to be used directly. Experience often kill people to know it. What is by

Experience, experience is a specific time period, there was a specific event, the method used to solve the time at the event, but the time in advance, the environment is changing, how the method can be used to solve past problems now it? Ox

Once said that imitation is always super, but who Mengniu Mengniu, but who will one day learn more than Mengniu Mengniu. Can learn from others, mainly to learn other people's way of thinking, learn from others advanced the concept, learn from others present management methods, but

This is their own business needs and realities, can not copy the ah! So, at the times of human resources to do the same for our people. Revolutionary predecessors have long taught us, "be sure to Marxist theory and concrete practice of China" in order to

Solve the problems we face.

Second, the unrealistic expectations

When talking about the interview, the human resources of a set of theoretical understanding, quite everyone's style, so that finally found a leading expert, it seems that the problem encountered by enterprises he (she) can be solved . In fact the basic ability

Particularly poor, even the most basic EXCEL spreadsheet methods are not relevant, it will use the WORD; even human resources analysis will not do, you know about a lot of reasons; to do the work of previous batches of a mess, the highest level on their own ; that the company's system

There are no standard, the units on their own copied is the best; and so on. Business is looking to solve our problems now, rather than find people who would say that blaming others Club Road. Have a good theoretical foundation of human resources managers not only non-

Often deep, and basic vocational skills are also very outstanding, not only do the analysis of strategic human resources, and do basic business operations, it also could get the next release.

Third, grumble

No boss is willing to hire disgruntled people, any people will not complain will be raised. Like to complain about people, life will not have success. The destruction of life, often begins with complaints and grievances. A lot of people do not know the boss invited us to business

Do come, that as the "said (shuo) off" the. That this is inappropriate, what not, grumble, the company said nothing. Therefore, each human resource practitioners must understand their career orientation and work orientation, such as

If all systems in normal operation of enterprises that want us to do?

Fourth, the quick success

No one took 10 days to amend the company's rules and regulations and operating manuals, and copying the original's basic model, so I called "zombies." Why? First, rigid thinking and the brain, do not understand the theory with real

Occasion, did not know each business has its own characteristics, do not know to find a suitable system for the healthy functioning of the enterprise system; second, a human brain is not functioning and not on the "body" the same? I understand that people's actions, like in the old as soon as possible

Board before being appreciated and recognized, some "performance", to prove that the brain has "water." In the past few days may not even understand the company's mode of operation is not it, even the most basic of the company do not understand it, the courage to "hit" "medical disease"? This

Kind of person is often counter-productive, can not be long until they become "unemployed" in one, and if the boss is a sensible words.

Five castles in the air

Human Resources Manager started going to the new business the most difficult is the "root", can often, but some people are hanging in the air, can not agree with the corporate culture and find fault.

And "maverick" and can not put their own views and business practices together, Dakan their ideas and theories, can companies that are not useful, the final choice himself "retired from" the.

Sixth, the narrow field of vision

Zhang Aiqing teacher once said, human resource managers must be a management guru, should have the financial, human resources, production, purchasing, sales, and other aspects of psychological knowledge, ie: is a hybrid home. They know you do not know

Knowledge, do not understand the company's processes, how will your business seriously then, if you're better than he has professional advice than he has in-depth, he will naturally find you, put you as a strategic partner, otherwise, you is a hands-on mission, every day

Holding a system, theory ah in the study, the results of "a hundred no one with a scholar." Therefore, human resource managers must enhance their knowledge of various types of learning, while in-depth understanding of the company's business, only the company's overall operations are the more profound the

Solution, you will realize the hard work of business units to understand their real needs, rather than the day "behind closed doors." Here, also put forward a little quiz to see if your knowledge or ability to manage exactly to what level: 1, what is the amount of profit

Analysis? 2, mergers and acquisitions have attention to those matters? 3, What is 5S? Each S's mean? 4, how do the financial analysis? 5, the financial balance sheet, income statement and what is the difference? 6, what is the sale of the 4P and 4C? 7, "The Wealth of Nations"

Who wrote it? 8, if you are a party, the Party's basic line? 9, the next three years and this year's business objectives? 10, according to your understanding, write the company's business plan next year? (Less than 3,000 words).

Answered the 10 questions above, then ask yourself, my presence, the presence of my department to create much value for the company? Then apply the 16 questions and see how their own level in the end? 1, when calculating overtime pay, overtime and days to the base

Set? 2, part-time labor contract are those characteristics? 3, employees and the company did not sign labor contracts, labor relations form the fact that the company can at any time terminate the labor contract? If not, how? Renewal of the contract, the company in advance

30 days inform the employees? If the deadline is not renewed, how to deal with? 4, recruitment in the behavioral interview method STAR stand for? 5, for human resources management tool we often use roi, what is it? 6, performance appraisal

The last two aspects of that? 7, What is post value assessment? The most popular of which method? 8, what is management by objectives? What is the principle of smart? 9, the staff of the punishment a man named hot stove effect, it's four characteristics? 10 results

Effective interview in Hamburg principle how is it? 11, the monthly pay-days are working days and how many days? 12, SWOT analysis is what? 13, teams and groups What is the difference? 14, staff training, the whole process is like? 15 posts

Bit instructions include those parts? 16, working conditions, recruitment of staff how to write?

In real life, many human resource managers, human resource managers, but very little good reason is that most human resource managers are more impulsive, can not use their professional knowledge to solve real business problems,

So you do not complain about the company's human resources department of major policy decisions were not always!

Discovery Brings Us One Step Closer To "Milking" Pigeons

Are you tired of boring old milk in your cereal? Is the half and half in your coffee leaving you flat? If so, the recent discovery of the gene responsible for pigeon crop "lactation" might be the good news you've been waiting for. While mammals are the only animals that produce true milk, a number of birds produce a nutritious, liquid "crop milk" for their chicks. From the article: "The idea of drinking pigeon milk may bring a shudder to every sane and rational person in the world, but it's actually quite nutritious. Although it's high in fat, to help the young squabs develop fast, it's also packed full of antioxidants and immune-system-boosting proteins."

Perry?s debate performance gives some Florida straw poll attendees second thoughts (The Ticket)

Perry (Carlos Osorio:AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry may have gone into Thursday's Republican presidential debate as the national front-runner, but his poor debate showing could hurt his chances in tonight's Republican Party of Florida straw poll.

Several delegates who will vote in the "Presidency 5" straw poll said they arrived planning to cast a vote for Perry on Thursday, but now they're having second thoughts.

"Everybody we talked to pulled away from Perry," said Beth Shields, a delegate from Brooksville, Fla., adding that some were transferring their support to Herman Cain.

As Byron York of the Washington Examiner noted, there is a possibility that Cain might benefit from Perry's loss of support. Cain staffers working the conference found themselves so swamped with a demand for Cain 2012 swag that they ran out of buttons, T-shirts and stickers within a few hours on Saturday morning. Before Cain volunteers received fresh supplies of Cain paraphernalia that afternoon, some had been handing out pins they unclipped and stickers they peeled off of their own clothes.

Delegates who spoke to The Ticket before the straw poll cited two primary reasons for switching their vote: Perry's trouble countering former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at the debate and his comment that those who disagree with him on how Texas handles illegal immigration don't "have a heart." (Illegal immigrants in Texas can apply for in-state tuition at Texas public colleges and universities, a policy that Perry's rivals denounced in the debate.)

"If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they've been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart," Perry said at the debate.

Although the policy approach does conflict with contemporary conservative views on the issue, some debate attendees stressed that their umbrage had more to do with Perry's response than his support for the policy.

"He's taking jabs at his own base," said Lisa Mathews, who came from Dallas, Texas to attend the debate. "Nobody likes to be told they don't have a heart."

Even those who were sympathetic to Perry on immigration took issue with his handling of the exchange.

"He fell flat," said Karin Hoffman, a delegate from Broward County, Fla. "He had this perfect opportunity but it was almost like the wind was totally knocked out of him."

Of course, Perry went into the debate with strong support among Florida Republicans, so there's always the chance that he'll go on to win the straw poll.

The Republican Party of Florida has organized four straw polls since 1979, and every winner has gone on to take the nomination.

HBT: Kemp has a shot at the triple crown

At the outset, I?d like to remind people that I saw Matt Kemp play in a spring training game back in February, observed that he was in great shape and hustled his ass off even though he was with a decidedly B-squad Dodgers team that day and that he looked primed for a big season. You know, for the record.

Kemp had a big game near the end of his very big season last night, hitting a two-run homer, smacking three doubles and scoring three times in the Dodgers win over the Giants. ?For the year that puts Kemp at .326/.403/.582 with 36 homers, 118 RBI and 40 stolen bases. On top of that is great defense in center field. And he?s doing it on a team that has had every reason to mail it in if it wanted to since, oh, May.

And here?s something I didn?t realize until a reader pointed it out to me yesterday: the dude has a chance at the triple crown.

Kemp leads the NL in RBI with 118, which is five ahead of Ryan Howard. ?He is one home run short of Albert Pujols? league-leading 37. Batting average may be the toughest, as his .326 is four points behind Ryan Braun?s league-leading .330 and three behind Jose Reyes? .329, but it?s not impossible to close a four-point gap in six games. Heck, Kemp gained four points on the idle Braun yesterday alone.

In the event Kemp is able to pull this off, he will be the first NL triple crown winner since Joe Medwick did it with the Cardinals in 1937. ?And of course, the first person in either league since Yaz did it in 1967.

MVP? ?Is there any doubt?

Dodgers' Kershaw beats Giants 2-1 for 20th win (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Clayton Kershaw impressed just about everybody except himself in becoming the Los Angeles Dodgers' first 20-game winner in 21 years. Fittingly, his accomplishment came against a team he has dominated this season.

Kershaw improved to 5-0 against San Francisco with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night that pushed the Giants closer to elimination from the NL West race.

Kershaw (20-5) allowed six hits and one run in 7 1-3 innings, walked two and struck out six to become the first Dodgers pitcher to go 5-0 against the Giants since Vic Lombardi in 1946. He did it on what would have been Lombardi's 89th birthday.

"Don't overthink it," Kershaw said of his strategy against the Dodgers' biggest rival. "You have a tendency sometimes when you face a team over and over to try to change things."

Four of those victories came against two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, with Kershaw allowing one earned run in those games. That came on an eighth-inning homer by Chris Stewart.

"It's frustrating, obviously," Lincecum said. "But when you go up against a guy like that who's having a year like this, you've got to be on your game. Every run counts, so you can't go out there and give him a two-run lead and kind of put the ball in his court to put his foot down because he tends to do that a lot. And it's not just against us."

Kershaw issued his only two walks after Stewart's one-out homer. Kenley Jansen relieved him, striking out pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval swinging and Carlos Beltran on a called third strike to end the inning.

"I love situations like that, tight games, especially when we're up by one," Jansen said. "That's a blessing just being a part of him getting those 20 wins."

Javy Guerra pitched the ninth to earn his 19th save in 20 chances. Kershaw hugged Jansen when the game ended.

"It's a testament to our bullpen tonight," Kershaw said. "These guys picked me up time in and time out. It's a culmination of things. When you win 20 games it's a whole lot of people helping you out back there."

Kershaw kept his name in the mix to win the NL Cy Young Award. He's tied with Arizona's Ian Kennedy for the league lead in wins and leads the majors with a 2.27 ERA. Kershaw's 242 strikeouts lead the NL, too.

"If I were to receive that, it wouldn't go lightly," he said.

Lincecum doesn't have a vote, but if he did he said it would go to Kershaw "just because of the numbers that he has.

"He's leading in a lot of categories and putting up a 20-win season is huge, especially with the team they've got. He's done a magnificent job this year. I'm sure (the four wins against Lincecum) will weigh into the decisions of people, but we're not the only team he's had great games against," he said.

Lincecum (13-13) extended his career-high loss total, giving up two runs and eight hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked three. The right-hander got two or fewer runs of support for the 20th time in his 32 starts.

The loss ended the Giants' eight-game winning streak and dropped them another game behind Atlanta and St. Louis in the NL wild card race. They trail the Braves by 4 1/2 and the Cardinals by two with eight games to play.

"It hurts a lot, just because of the roll we'd been on," Lincecum said. "This is going to set us back a little bit. We've just got to pray for a miracle."

Jerry Sands homered leading off the second inning to help the Dodgers win their fourth in a row and move a game above .500 for the first time since April 29 against San Diego. James Loney's RBI single with two outs in the first gave them a 1-0 lead.

Kershaw became the first Dodgers pitcher to win 20 games since Ramon Martinez went 20-6 in 1990. The left-hander extended his winning streak to a career-high seven games and improved to 12-1 in 16 home starts.

"The whole body of work has been tremendous," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The kid's been doing this every time out for the most part. The performances speak for themselves. You don't need to politic for him."

Kershaw departed to a standing ovation with one out in the eighth. He left the stadium carrying a bottle of 2000 vintage Dom Perignon champagne decorated to commemorate his milestone by clubhouse attendant Mitch Poole.

"If this boy doesn't win the Cy Young, something is definitely wrong," said Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp, who went 2-for-2 with two strikeouts, giving him a career-high 182 hits this season.

The Dodgers picked off baserunners three times, with Kershaw involved twice. He picked off Beltran to end the first and later got Justin Christian, giving Kershaw eight pickoffs which leads the NL.

NOTES: Kershaw is the 16th 20-game winner in Dodgers' history. ... The Dodgers improved to 23-20 in one-run games, including a 16-7 mark at home. ... Beltran snapped an 0 for 9 streak in his career against Kershaw with singles in his first two at-bats. ... At 23, Kershaw became the second-youngest 20-game winner in Dodgers' history behind Martinez, who was 22 in 1990. ... Kemp was chosen by his teammates as winner of the Roy Campanella Award, given to the Dodgers player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher. ... Lincecum fell to 0-3 with a 1.82 ERA in his five matchups with Kershaw this season.

Nikon Hypes Up Mystery Wednesday Launch

hmmmmA new Nikon website has just gone live, the rather curiously-named iamcomings.com. I guess these guys didn't want to sell. It consists of a lot of yellow, a countdown at around 43 hours as of this writing, and the ominous message "I AM COMING." What is coming? Well, we're guessing it's Nikon's mirrorless cameras, the V1 and J1. We saw some leaked specs a while back, and have been seeing patents and rumors for a months.

Palestinians to seek UN membership (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is pressing ahead Tuesday with his diplomatic campaign to gain full U.N. membership, as the divisive issue of Palestinian statehood takes center stage ahead of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly session.

Abbas had meetings scheduled with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, among leaders, as he sought to line up support ahead of his speech Friday to the General Assembly when the Palestinians vow to submit a letter formally requesting U.N. membership.

Envoys of the Quartet of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia ? planned to meet again Tuesday in an effort to avert a showdown over Palestinian statehood by crafting a way forward that would be enough to persuade the Palestinians to drop their bid and have enough caveats for Israel to get its support.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, in New York Tuesday for high-level meetings, told Europe-1 radio in Paris that his country is still working to get Mideast peace talks restarted before the United Nations faces a decision over whether to recognize a Palestinian state. "The status quo is untenable," Juppe said. "The only way to settle the Israeli-Palestinian problem is direct negotiations."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, meanwhile, told Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a Sept. 17 letter circulated Tuesday that his country backs the push for Palestinian statehood, and that recognizing it would be "an act of historic justice."

As the Palestinians edged closer to seeking statehood recognition from the United Nations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Abbas to meet with him in New York. The Israel leader said he wanted to resume peace talks, upping the pressure on Abbas and building on the frenzied diplomacy swirling around the Palestinians' bid.

While any submission by the Palestinians wait weeks or months for the U.N. action, it has Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the two sides back to a negotiating table.

Regardless, Abbas said he had not been swayed by what he called "tremendous pressure" to drop the bid for U.N. recognition and instead to resume peace talks with Israel. Senior aides to the Palestinian leader said Abbas was undaunted by threats of punitive measures.

"Abbas says to every one: it's enough, 20 years of negotiations are more than enough, the world should intervene and end the Israeli occupation as long as the USA can't," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, an Abbas aide.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said, however, there was still time to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis.

Clinton told reporters in New York that the U.S. is talking with all sides to defuse the standoff, noting that there were still several days to seek a compromise before Abbas' speech.

She joined Netanyahu in calling for new talks and repeated the U.S. position that the only path to a separate state for Palestinians is through negotiations with Israel.

Nabil Shaath, senior aide to Abbas, told The Associated Press that the Palestinian leader informed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during their meeting Monday that he would present him with a letter requesting full membership on Friday, ahead of Abbas' speech to the General Assembly.

Any candidate for U.N. membership must submit a letter to the secretary-general stating it is a "peace-loving" state and accepts the U.N. Charter. Ban is expected to examine the Palestinian letter and then send it to the 15-member U.N. Security Council, which must give its approval before a vote in the larger General Assembly.

Ishtayeh said the letter will state: "Palestine is a peace-loving state and has contributed to human civilization, that it has succeeded in building state institutions." It would also cite the need to consider the pre-1967 Mideast War borders as those of the Palestinian state, he said.

Although any submission by the Palestinians could wait weeks or months for U.N. action, it has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity with Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the sides back to the negotiating table.

Shaath said last ditch efforts to dissuade the Palestinian president from approaching the Security Council had failed. He said Palestinians had been threatened with harsh punitive measures but had decided to move ahead nonetheless.

The comment appeared to refer to the warnings by some in the U.S. Congress that current and future financial aid to the Palestinian Authority could be in jeopardy if they move ahead with the membership bid. The U.S. gives some $500 million a year in aid to the Palestinians.

Israel has not said how it would respond to a Palestinian declaration of independence, though hardliners in Netanyahu's government have called for a variety of measures, including annexing the West Bank or withholding tax funds that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinians.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians are violating "the spirit and the word of signed commitments" that pledged to resolve disagreements through negotiations. "Israel reserves the right to respond," he said Tuesday, refusing to elaborate.

Each side in on-again-off-again Israeli-Palestinian talks has accused the other of being an untrustworthy and intransigent participant in the peace process.

In a statement issued late Monday, Netanyahu called on Abbas to begin "direct negotiations in New York and continue them in Jerusalem and Ramallah." It provided no other details or indications that Netanyahu was willing to cede to any of the Palestinians' demands.

Ban "reiterated his support for the two-state solution and stressed his desire to ensure that the international community and the two parties can find a way forward for resuming negotiations within a legitimate and balanced framework," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said after the secretary-general met with Abbas.

The comment underscored the desires of some members of the Quartet of Mideast mediators that Palestinian statehood should not be granted before a resumption of peace talks. While the four international mediators have repeatedly called for renewed negotiations, Russia supports U.N. membership for Palestine.

The long-stalled negotiations have been unable to solve key issues including Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital. Israel captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed at a Monday night meeting that the Quartet envoys should meet again for the third straight day on Tuesday, officials said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic work, said progress was being made on a joint Quartet statement that would include a modest upgrade to Palestinian status at the U.N., address Israel's demand that it be recognized as a Jewish state, and set a broad timeline for renewed negotiations.

The timeframe wouldn't be a deadline, as such, but would be aimed at addressing the Palestinian desire to see quick action. The offer would come with an unchanged message that Washington would veto the Palestinian bid at the Security Council for U.N. membership, but at the very least it would represent a dignity-saving compromise for Abbas' U.S.-backed government.

By already promising a veto in the Security Council, the U.S. has blocked that course for the Palestinians before they even submit the request.

Alternatively, the Palestinians could seek the approval of a majority of the General Assembly's 193 member states to upgrade their status from a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state ? a designation that would leave them with a symbolic victory despite years of failed negotiations and waning hopes for statehood.

In either scenario, the Palestinians will have shown they have the power to force action on the issue at a time when Israel is feeling increasingly isolated in the region.

Analysis: Obama, GOP shift tax, budget fight into 2012 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress are digging in to fight the 2012 election campaign over the budget and taxes, leaving a congressional "super committee" in political no man's land.

On one side is Obama vowing to defend social programs and proposing new taxes on the rich; on the other side are the Republicans opposing any new taxes and demanding deep social program cuts. What's a super committee to do?

Probably the bare minimum required, then call it a day, leaving voters to make the tough decisions about fiscal policy at the polls in November 2012, analysts said.

"It leaves the committee in a difficult position," said Keefe Bruyette & Woods policy analyst Brian Gardner.

That is no surprise to skeptics who have long doubted the 12-member, bipartisan super committee's capacity for a fiscal policy breakthrough, yet it will disappoint some.

The bitter debate in Washington had moderated after Congress took its summer break. Lawmakers had gotten an earful from disgusted constituents back home and the mood on Capitol Hill seemed more respectful. Cooperation was in the air.

The super committee, known formally as the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, is supposed to find by November 23 at least $1.2 trillion in added budget savings over 10 years. Some had been hoping that it would do much more.

A chance of that remains, but political positioning is quickly overtaking the panel's agenda and an ideological standoff that prevailed through most of the year is returning -- a worry for financial markets keen for signs that the United States government is getting its fiscal house in order.

"Chances for a super committee deal have faded significantly in the past week, as both sides have dug in their heels," said Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at consultancy Potomac Research Group.

"This move by Obama has made a deal even less likely."

ROSE GARDEN TALK

Obama released a plan on Monday at the White House calling for more than $3 trillion in deficit cuts over 10 years, with roughly half of the savings coming from higher taxes on the wealthy and big corporations.

"This is purely politics, aimed at Obama's demoralized base. It undoubtedly has been poll-tested, so now Obama has a populist campaign issue. There's obviously no chance this could pass" on a vote in Congress, Valliere said.

The president vowed on Monday to shield middle-class social insurance programs from cuts unless Congress raises taxes on the wealthy and corporations. His plan will go to the super committee, which can do as it pleases with his proposals.

"I will not support any plan that puts all of the burden for closing our deficit on ordinary Americans," Obama said.

"We are not going to have a one-sided deal that hurts the folks who are most vulnerable."

Republican reaction to Obama's plan was swift and predictably negative.

"Veto threats, a massive tax hike, phantom savings, and punting on entitlement reform is not a recipe for economic or job growth -- or even meaningful deficit reduction," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

"The good news is that the joint committee is taking this issue far more seriously than the White House."

Republican Senator Pat Toomey, a super committee member, praised Obama for putting ideas on the table, but he said the president's plan looked like "political posturing."

"With the select committee's deadline looming, we do not have time to waste on political games and pushing big tax increases that will only make our economy weaker," he said.

The U.S. budget deficit in 2011 is expected to be about $1.3 trillion. The national debt stands at $14.7 trillion.

Most fiscal experts agree that restructuring of social programs, such as the Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs for the elderly and poor, is needed to reduce the deficit, along with basic tax reforms that bring in more revenues.

Democrats see unfairness in the present tax system that allows many of the well-to-do and large corporations to dodge taxes. Multibillionaire Warren Buffett, for instance, has said that he pays a lower effective tax rate than many of his employees.

LEVIN: OBAMA 'ON TARGET'

"The president's proposed 'Buffett rule' is right on target," said Representative Sander Levin, the top Democrat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, referring to Obama's proposal for a tax on millionaires.

Two years ago, only 287,000 out of about 172 million U.S. taxpayers made 9.5 percent of all reported U.S. income. Of those highest earners, Internal Revenue Service data also showed that 1,470 owed no federal income taxes in 2009.

Today's top tax rate, 35 percent, is half what it was 30 years ago. The last time the tax code was thoroughly overhauled was in 1986, when President Ronald Reagan, a Republican, raised corporate taxes and cut the top tax rate.

"The very wealthy in our country have seen their incomes skyrocket while middle class income has stalled and poverty has risen. We need an approach to deficit reduction that is balanced and a tax system that fairly represents today's reality," Levin said in a statement.

Pantech Breakout shows its darling face in the wild

The Pantech Breakout, Verizon's least-hyped LTE phone this side of the Droid Bionic, has seen a fair amount of time splayed out on paper without getting its fair share of closeups. This has finally changed, however, now that Droid-Life was able to get its hands on true-blue images of the device. It appears to be a unit that's already arrived in a Verizon retail outlet, lending credence to the rumor that the 4-inch Android handset will be available for our purchase next week. Unfortunately, Verizon's still acting as if the phone doesn't exist, so we'll just have to strum our fingers on the desk for (hopefully) just a few more days to see if it'll get acknowledged.

A Good Understanding of the Harmony Between the Spirit, Mind ...

What a wonderful thing it can be when we are living in perfect harmony with our spirit, mind and body. If you think about it, if we do, we wouldn?t be affected by fear, but rather we will feel healthy, happy, confident, contented and more importantly, we?ll be at peace with our creator. While this may not seem to be humanly possible, there have been individuals who have mastered the art of understanding sweet harmony between their mind, body and spirit, which makes their lives more meaningful and stress free.

Despite several attempts from countless people to achieve this state of peace, no one has any concrete evidence of anyone reaching these heights of peace and tranquility in this life, or the life to come. In fact, for a human being to have total control over their spirit, mind, and body, they will need to achieve perfect resonance with the spirit of God, mainly because we are weak and unable to do it on our own. Therefore we should try as best as possible to channel our energies on getting our minds and bodies to harmonize with our spirit, to reduce daily stress and feelings of depression. However, when we undergo stress and we can?t concentrate on what we are supposed to do, the stress will increase and there will be a break down in our health, which further leads to fatigue and severe depression. It?s all a vicious cycle, so we should try to be more relaxed in order to achieve that perfect harmony between our spirit, mind and body.

Let?s look at some ways of reducing stress which should help us live a more peaceful live.

Stress begins in the mind ? You should never allow it to take over your mind, body or spirit because it will definitely make you sick and ultimately diseased.

Don?t think about problems all the time ? There will always be problems and challenges, just don?t allow it to consume every second of your thought life. Instead of thinking about the problems, try thinking about the solutions to the problems.

Face your challenges without being fearful ? When you are brave, you?ll take on any problem by using a positive approach to resolve your issues.

Confront your fears head on ? You will come to understand that not all things are as bad as you imagined, because when you are victorious over your fears, you will be able to move forward and live a stress free life.

Express your feelings ? Don?t try to bottle up everything inside you. Try talking to your friends; you will be surprised to know that friends and family are some of the best counselors around.

Live a healthy life ? Try to maintain healthy eating and exercising habits, as this will revitalize your body, soul and spirit.

When you have conquered your fears, then you will begin to live a more meaningful and stress free life, you will definitely sleep better at nights. Moreover, when you have complete control over your untrained and wild lifestyle, you will begin to experience the soothing sense of peace and well-being, as your mind, body and spirit will blend in perfect harmony.

Marrieds think singles have it made when planning for retirement ...

Reality is far different; more married couples are saving

By Lavonne Kuykendall

Ever call your spouse ?the old ball and chain?? If so, you may be on to something.

Having a spouse apparently is a real drag when it comes to making retirement decisions, such as how much to save and where to live, according to a survey of married and single adults.

Just over half, 53%, of the married respondents thinks that planning for retirement would be easier if they were single, according to the survey, conducted by the Charles Schwab & Co. Inc.

Even more telling: 69% of singles agree with them.

Schwab conducted 2,000 telephone interviews in August to get an idea of the views of single and married adults on retirement planning. Although adults generally think singles had some advantages, the reality is much different, according to the survey.

?At a time when the number of single adults is at a historical high in our country, our survey shows that this group has ground to make up in terms of retirement readiness,? senior vice president Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz said in a statement.

While marrieds think singles have some advantages, the singles don?t seem to be taking advantage of them. Eighty-five percent of the married adults said they were saving for retirement against only 67% of singles. A majority of singles, 57%, agreed that not having a spouse?s additional income ?could be a challenge.? More than one third (38%) of married adults say they are confident about their retirement readiness, against 32% of singles.

That said, married couples clearly see the grass as being a bit greener on the single side, and 58% of married adults said it would be easier for them to decide when to retire without having to take their spouse into consideration. Another 62% said that deciding where to live in retirement would be easier if they were single. Over one-fourth (27%) of married adults say their spouse isn?t even their financial confidant. Singles keep it closer to home, with 55% saying they turn to close family members for financial advice.

A little less than half (47%) of the singles saw a disadvantage in not having a spouse to rely on for health insurance or long-term care, while 58% of married adults thought that would be a challenge for a single.
