FTSE opens higher on hope of Greek deal (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Share prices climbed further in opening trades on Tuesday on the back of Monday's gains sparked by hopes private creditors will reach a deal on Greece's debt, as central bank governors backed measures to underpin lenders.

London's FTSE 100 index opened 0.24 percent higher at 5,736.36 points.

Banks were on Monday working urgently with the EU on a new rescue for Greece in talks in Rome, while French President Nicolas Sarkozy said a scheme to roll over debt into 30-year bonds is under discussion.

Sarkozy declared in Paris: "We won't let Greece fall. We will defend the euro. It's in all of our interests."
