The Georgia softball teams hosts the 2011 NCAA Athens Regional this weekend at Jack Turner Softball Stadium, and the Bulldogs will play as the No. 1 seed for the regional.

In addition to earning the top seed in the regional, Georgia (47-12) was tabbed the overall No. 6 National Seed for the 2011 NCAA Division I Softball Championships. The Bulldogs opening game of the tournament will be the second contest in the Athens Regional at 5 p.m. on Friday against fourth-seeded Georgia State (36-23), the Colonial Athletic Association champion. Regional second seed Florida State (30-26), the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament champion, and third seed University of Alabama at Birmingham (38-17) from Conference USA will play in the first game of the Regional on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Georgia is hosting a regional for the fourth time in school history and for the second-consecutive year. When hosting a regional, the Bulldogs have gone 13-4. Overall, Georgia is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and all 10 appearances have come in consecutive years under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. Over the previous nine tournament berths, UGA has compiled a 36-18 record in NCAA postseason play.

The Bulldogs opening game of the regional will come against in-state foe Georgia State. The two teams have not played against each other since 2007, when the Bulldogs defeated the Panthers, 9-0. All-time, UGA holds an 8-2 lead in the series including winning the last seven meetings.

In the all-time UGA-FSU series, the Bulldogs and Seminoles are tied at 6-6. The last meeting between the two schools came in the 2010 Athens Regional with the Bulldogs winning 5-2. It was the second meeting of the 2010 season between UGA and FSU with the Seminoles winning in Athens during the regular season, 4-3. This year will mark the third time FSU has come to Athens for the NCAA Regionals. In 2006, the Seminoles won the Athens Regional including going 2-1 vs. the Bulldogs.

In the all-time UGA-UAB series, the Bulldogs lead 5-1. The last meeting between the Bulldogs and the Blazers was in 2001, a 2-0 UGA victory. The two schools played four times that year with UGA winning the first game, UAB taking the second and the Bulldogs winning the final two.
