Final Fantasy VII on mobile is 'years away' according to producer

Just days ago we heard from Square Enix about the launch of Final Fantasy VI for iOS this winter, and also that Final Fantasy VII may be on the cards down the line if all went well. Another day, another interview, another Square Enix producer and we're told that Final Fantasy VII on iOS or Android is "years away." From Shacknews:

"Unfortunately, it's not that it's not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile," Tokita told Shacknews. "It's that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won't be able to contain the space it takes. It's over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years."

When the classic RPG launched on the PlayStation it required the use of 3 game disks, and the recent re-launch for Windows PC topped in at over 3GB. The App Store limit on app size is currently 2GB.

There's some sensible truth in what has been said. There's still too many 8 and 16GB iPhones, iPods and iPads out there to make something as ambitious as Final Fantasy VII a viable option for many iOS gamers. When many of those same devices struggled with free space to complete an OTA update for iOS 7, paying for and downloading a massive game isn't exactly the greatest idea.

But, these things can change, but it's not being ruled out, which is good. Is Final Fantasy VII something you really, really want on your iPhone or iPad, or are you in agreement with the storage issue?

Bellator CEO makes peculiar offer to welterweight champion Ben Askren

As the Bellator fight promotion has grown over the years, they’ve taken part in some of the typical “big-time” organizational rites of passage – signing a major cable network deal, inking big-name free agents and, of course, suing their own fighters over contracts.

After the UFC made an offer to Bellator-restricted free agent Eddie Alvarez, the fledgling promotion exercised its matching rights clause in the contract with the fighter to keep him from signing with the UFC.

Alvarez and Bellator sued one another over their differing interpretations of “matching,” and for over a year, the only fighting that the lightweight has done has been in courtrooms. Alvarez and Bellator finally settled on his fighting against Michael Chandler in the organization’s first ever pay-per-view event.

Now Bellator’s most dominant champion, Ben Askren, is a restricted free agent. Despite Askren’s back-and-forth insults over the years with UFC president Dana White, the promoter/executive has said that he is interested in talking money with Askren.

The sticking point, of course, is that Bellator has the right to match any offer that Askren may accept from another promotion through July 31, 2014. It seemed that even if the UFC wanted to bring in the Olympic wrestler and Bellator champ, another protracted and ugly Alvarez-type situation could ensue.

According to Askren, however, Bellator is fine with him taking an offer from the UFC and not even exercising their matching rights…on one condition. Askren told ESPN in an interview that Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney called him last week and shared some interesting news with him.

"He just called me and said straight up, 'I think you're the best welterweight in the world,'" Askren said.

"’How about I let you go free if you fight GSP?’," Askren said Rebney told him.

Bjorn Rebney apparently now claims that if the UFC makes an offer to Askren that includes a bout agreement for a welterweight title shot as his first fight, Bellator will let Askren walk. The UFC’s welterweight strap is next on the line in November when champion Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks fight.

There is no reason to believe that Rebney’s offer is serious or likely, of course. Has he had Viacom (Bellator’s corporate owner) lawyers draft up a new agreement for Askren that put in writing the offer he extended verbally? Will Rebney take away his handshake deal if St. Pierre loses to Hendricks?

What if Askren signs a deal with the UFC, is promised a title shot in his first fight for them but then the UFC champ gets injured? Will Rebney then sue to prevent Askren from fighting anyone else but that injured champion?

Just a couple weeks after Askren won the final bout on his Bellator contract, in August, Dana White told reporters that the UFC would “talk to Ben.” According to Askren, however, the UFC and his management have not gotten down to any detailed contract talks yet.

"It didn't really get down to any nitty-gritty details and work on the contract," Askren said last week.

Askren has made it known that he wants to fight St. Pierre.

Only time will tell if: A. The UFC will make Askren an offer that he wants to accept and then; B. if Bellator will indeed try to match it or not. Even after those two steps, messy litigation is still entirely possible. History suggests, in fact, that it may be likely.

This Isn't Your Granny Smith's Harvesting Technology

In West Michigan, it's apple harvest time. That may conjure up images of picturesque orchards and old-fashioned fun: growers harvesting apples and then selecting them by hand.

Think again.

Robotic arms, computer vision and high-resolution photography are helping Michigan growers wash, sort and package apples at top speeds in the business — think 2,000 apples per minute.

With this modern technology, farmers are expanding production and getting Galas and Ginger Golds from Michigan orchards to grocery stores faster and more cheaply.

That's especially important during bumper crop years like 2013, when Michigan apple growers are expected to bring in a potentially record-setting 30 million bushels.

Rob Steffens, an apple grower on West Michigan's fertile "fruit ridge," has about 280 acres of orchards northwest of Grand Rapids. He packs 800 to a 1,000 apple trees into each acre, which is about three times as many trees as his father grew on the land.

With so many new trees, Steffens and other Michigan growers needed a way to process all those extra apples faster and more cheaply.

So Steffens pooled his resources with six other farmers to build a $7 million apple packing plant. It's where his apples are sorted, washed, waxed and readied for shipping to grocery stores.

Wooden crates with "Steffens" stamped on them stack up against one wall in the warehouse. A machine picks up the crates and dumps the apples onto a sort of water conveyor belt. The three-foot-wide river of bobbing apples moves quickly, as a machine sorts the fruit.

Then the apples go through a tunnel filled with flashing lights.

"Really, this is the brains of that," Steffens says, as he points to the tunnel. "This takes a picture of each apple — I think it's between 25 and 29 times a second."

The computer then forms a 3D model of each apple so it can figure out the fruit's size, color and quality. The apples are sorted by weight and color in a fraction of a second. Bruised or misshapen apples are rejected.

"See, and it's kicking out fruit like this," Steffens says as he points to a blemish no bigger than a dime on the skin of one of the rejected apples.

The high-tech machine means the growers can process and pack way more fruit with the same amount of workers. On a typical day, the machine can scan almost 2,000 apples a minute.

"It's processing at an astonishing rate," says horticulturist Randy Beaudry, at Michigan State University.

But this new technology, he says, is what Michigan apple growers need to compete with other states.

"If, for instance, a large box store says, 'OK, we want fruit that are between 2.5 and 2.75 inches.' And they want them 80 percent red with coloration. And they want zero defects — Michigan growers can get that fruit," he says. "And they can do it within a few hours time."

Each year, Michigan is typically only behind Washington and New York state in terms of apple bushels. That has a lot to do with good weather and luck. But it's also because growers have been changing their orchards. Growers have been ripping out older, taller apple trees and replacing them with smaller ones, Beaudry says.

"The trees are shorter. They're closer together," he says. "We create what we call fruiting walls. That's a relatively recent innovation, but it's part of a long-term trend to reduce the size of apple trees, so that they're harvested more easily and more efficiently. So we don't need as much labor."

More and more technology is needed to move labor-intensive agricultural products like apples efficiently to market, Beaudry says.

Fortunately for us, the end result still tastes like an old-fashioned Michigan apple in October.

Ashley Tisdale switches gears to voice 'Sabrina'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ashley Tisdale said she's delighted to voice the title character in Hub TV's new "Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch." But her 3-year-old niece has her beat.

"She's super excited about it," Tisdale said. "She saw the 'Sabrina' poster in my house and said, 'Aunt Ashley is Sabrina!'"

For Tisdale, her role in the animated series debuting 9 a.m. EDT Saturday is an acting treat.

Sabrina is "such a cute, quirky character. She's really cool and popular in 'witch world,' but when it comes to her human world she's klutzy and completely opposite," she said. "It's fun to play with both sides."

There's another advantage to the show, Tisdale said: Voice recording sessions don't demand playing dress-up and she can even work in sweats.

The live-action series "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," which starred Melissa Joan Hart as a high school student who discovers she's a witch, aired from 1996-2003.

Tisdale's voice-acting skills, honed in projects including "Phineas and Ferb," allow her to continue playing characters Sabrina's age or even younger. But the former "High School Musical" star now is 28, recently engaged to rocker Christopher French (they're in "the beginning stages" of wedding plans, she said) and runs her own production company.

Among other projects, the company is producing a pilot for ABC Family, Tisdale said. She's also keeping on-screen roles in the forefront, playing Rebel Wilson's sister in freshman sitcom "Super Fun Night" and taping an episode next week of "The Crazy Ones," the new Robin Williams comedy on CBS.

She sounds a bit awed talking about Wilson, who's wearing writing, producing and starring hats for her ABC sitcom. That is both daunting and inspiring, said Tisdale, adding, "You're so proud of her because she's doing it."

Williams is another role model, said the actress who began working as a preteen.

"I grew up watching every Robin Williams movie ever made, so this is so exciting," she said. "It's cool to be able to work with people you've looked up to and enjoyed and can learn from."
